Simultaneous removal of pharmaceuticals and heavy metals from aqueous phase via adsorptive strategy: A critical review.

The coexistence of pharmaceuticals and heavy metals is regarded as a serious threat to aquatic environments. Adsorbents have been widely applied to the simultaneous removal of pharmaceuticals and metals from aqueous phase. Through a comprehensive review, behaviors that promote, inhibit, or have no effect on simultaneous adsorption of pharmaceuticals and heavy metals were found to depend on the system of contaminants and adsorbents and their environmental conditions, such as: characteristics of adsorbent and pollutant, temperature, pH, inorganic ions, and natural organic matter.

How partnership should work to bring innovative medicines to patients.

Scientists increasingly find themselves working in bilateral drug development alliances. Alliances are conceptually simple, but operationally challenging, resulting in the value-eroding misalignment and delays that alliances often experience. This case study of an exemplary collaboration between a small biotech and a global biopharmaceutical company is based on 15 interviews and a lessons-learned workshop conducted with the principal alliance team members.

Randomised clinical trial: vercirnon, an oral CCR9 antagonist, vs. placebo as induction therapy in active Crohn's disease.

Background: Many patients with active Crohn's disease do not adequately respond to therapies, highlighting the need for new treatments.

Aims: To conduct a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 study to assess the efficacy and safety of vercirnon, an oral inhibitor of CC chemokine receptor-9, for the treatment of patients with moderately-to-severely active Crohn's disease.

Methods: Patients with a Crohn's Disease Activity Index (CDAI) of 220-450, plus evidence of active disease (endoscopically confirmed or elevation of both C-reactive protein and faecal calprotectin), who had failed corticosteroid or immunosuppressant therapy were enrolled.

The prevalence of apraxia characteristics in patients with velocardiofacial syndrome as compared with other cleft populations.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the oral-motor function of children with a history of cleft lip and palate, cleft palate only, velocardiofacial syndrome, and children with normal oral structures to determine if children with velocardiofacial syndrome have more apraxia characteristics than the other populations have.

Design: The Apraxia Profile (Hickman, 1997) was administered to all participants in a prospective study.

Setting: The investigation was conducted at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

The synthesis and SAR of 2-amino-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidines: a new class of Aurora-A kinase inhibitors.

A new class of Aurora-A inhibitors have been identified based on the 2-amino-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine scaffold. Here, we describe the synthesis and SAR of this novel series. We report compounds which exhibit nanomolar activity in the Aurora-A biochemical assay and are able to inhibit tumor cell proliferation.
