Polyomaviruses are a group of small, non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses that can infect various hosts, including humans. BKPyV causes conditions such as human polyomavirus-associated nephropathy (HPyVAN), human polyomavirus-associated haemorrhagic cystitis (HPyVHC), and human polyomavirus-associated urothelial cancer (HPyVUC).
