Cationic antimicrobial peptides (CAMPs) are active defence components of the innate immune system. Several artificial CAMPs have been designed as antibiotic peptide therapeutics, but none have been reported to exert adjuvant activity in animal models. Here we show for the first time that an artificial CAMP, KLKLLLLLKLK (KLKL5KLK), is a potent inducer of adaptive immunity to co-injected antigens in vivo.

Article Synopsis
  • A 2-year randomized double-blind trial tested isaxonine in 20 boys aged 5 1/2-10 with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
  • The study measured walking times, motor ability, muscle strength, and myometry, but found no significant effect of the drug on disease progression.
  • Results indicated that muscle force measurements were more statistically powerful than function assessments, suggesting future trials should focus more on muscle strength indicators.

Fifty-seven boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy aged between 6 years 3 months and 13 years 6 months, who were at the point of losing the ability to walk or had recently done so, were fitted with lightweight knee-ankle-foot orthoses to re-establish walking. 47 walked well and independently in their orthoses, achieving good stability and confidence. 20 are still ambulant; the other 27 stopped walking at intervals ranging from eight to 48 months.
