Mitochondrial DNA oxidation and content in different metabolic phenotypes of women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Introduction: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affects 5-20% of reproductive-aged women. Insulin resistance (IR) is common in PCOS with consequent elevated risks of metabolic disorders and cardiovascular mortality. PCOS and obesity are complex conditions associated with Metabolic Syndrome (MS), contributing to cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D).

Gallbladder perforation in a patient undergoing PCNL: Case report and literature review.

Percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PCNL) is an effective therapeutic approach in cases of lithiasis, which is prone to complications. In this report we present a case of a 52-year-old female patient with recurrent episodes of lithiasis and, after PCNL, evolution with pain and abdominal distension on the 2nd post-operative day due to a perforation of the gallbladder. An exploratory laparotomy was performed, leading to clinical improvement, and the patient was discharged from the hospital on the 7th day after resolving the choleperitoneum.

Optimising β-Ti21S Alloy Lattice Structures for Enhanced Femoral Implants: A Study on Mechanical and Biological Performance.

The metastable β-Ti21S alloy exhibits a lower elastic modulus than Ti-6Al-4V ELI while maintaining high mechanical strength and ductility. To address stress shielding, this study explores the integration of lattice structures within prosthetics, which is made possible through additive manufacturing. Continuous adhesion between the implant and bone is essential; therefore, auxetic bow-tie structures with a negative Poisson's ratio are proposed for regions under tensile stress, while Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) structures with a positive Poisson's ratio are recommended for areas under compressive stress.

Presence of polyketide synthases and nonribosomal peptide synthetase in culturable bacteria associated with Aplysina fulva and Aplysina caissara (Porifera).

Culture-dependent and -independent studies have provided access to symbiont genes and the functions they play for host sponges. Thus, this work investigates the diversity, presence of genes of pharmacological interest, biological activities and metabolome of the bacteria isolated from the sponges Aplysina caissara and Aplysina fulva collected on the southwestern Atlantic Coast. The genes for Polyketide Synthases types I and II and Nonribosomal Peptide Synthetases were screened in more than 200 bacterial strains obtained, from which around 40% were putatively novel.
