Study and assessment of segregated biowaste composting: The case study of Attica municipalities.

This work aims to assess the operation of the first large scale segregated biowaste composting scheme in Greece to divert Household Food Waste (HFW) from landfill and produce a material which can be recovered and used as compost. The source separation and collection of HFW was deployed in selected areas in Attica Region serving about 3700 households. Sorted HFW is collected & transported to the Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT) plant in Attica Region that has been designed to produce Compost Like Output (CLO) from mixed MSW.

Waste-to-energy: A review of the status and benefits in USA.

The USA has significant experience in the field of municipal solid waste management. The hierarchy of methodologies for dealing with municipal solid wastes consists of recycling and composting, combustion with energy recovery (commonly called waste-to-energy) and landfilling. This paper focuses on waste-to-energy and especially its current status and benefits, with regard to GHG, dioxin and mercury emissions, energy production and land saving, on the basis of experience of operating facilities in USA.

RESHEN, a best practice approach for secure healthcare networks in Europe.

Electronic communication of healthcare related information (in the framework of Regional Healthcare Information Networks), introduces a number of security risks with regard to confidentiality, integrity and availability, which can become quite crucial taking into account its sensitive nature. Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is acknowledged as an appropriate means for dealing with such risks, as long as all the involved critical factors are first practically assessed. This paper presents a best-practice approach for secure regional healthcare networks in Europe, examining all the identified crucial parameters (technical, organisational, legal/regulatory, medical and business).

Interoperability among healthcare organizations acting as certification authorities.

One of the main problems in public key infrastructures (PKI) is currently the lack of interoperability at international level, which is greatly dependent on the automation of the cross-certification procedure using certificate policies (CP). This paper addresses the aforementioned need by presenting a method for the automated development and comparison of CPs, with main emphasis on healthcare environments. The basic elements of this method include standardization of the CP content for healthcare, a prototype decision-making algorithm for CPs comparison, representation of CPs in extensible markup language, as well as a JAVA-based CP comparison tool.

Multi-purpose HealthCare Telemedicine Systems with mobile communication link support.

The provision of effective emergency telemedicine and home monitoring solutions are the major fields of interest discussed in this study. Ambulances, Rural Health Centers (RHC) or other remote health location such as Ships navigating in wide seas are common examples of possible emergency sites, while critical care telemetry and telemedicine home follow-ups are important issues of telemonitoring. In order to support the above different growing application fields we created a combined real-time and store and forward facility that consists of a base unit and a telemedicine (mobile) unit.
