This study presents simulation results on passive structural health monitoring of a vibrating elastic structure for defect localization. The object considered in this study consists of a shell equipped with vibration sensors surrounding a vibrating structure such that they are coupled at a finite number of points. An acoustic digital twin (ADT) is used to model the non-defective state of the external shell.

We investigate the feasibility of using a known elastic target located near the seabed for the purpose of inferring characteristics of marine sediment. In the problem considered the object position and its burial depth are not known with precision. By killing or weakening trees, drought could change the partitioning of growth between tree sizes or species, thereby altering stand structure. Growth partitioning, often quantified using the growth dominance coefficient (DC) or the shape of tree size versus growth relationships (SGR), indicates the relative contribution of differently sized trees to the total stand growth. Changes in growth partitioning due to droughts are rarely examined but provide valuable information that links tree- and stand-level responses to droughts.

Extreme droughts are expected to increase in frequency and severity in many regions of the world, threatening multiple ecosystem services provided by forests. Effective strategies to adapt forests to such droughts require comprehensive information on the effects and importance of the factors influencing forest resistance and resilience. We used a unique combination of inventory and dendrochronological data from a long-term (>30 years) silvicultural experiment in mixed silver fir and Norway spruce mountain forests along a temperature and precipitation gradient in southwestern Germany.
