Article Synopsis
  • Somatostatin, typically known for inhibiting releases in the body, was found to enhance protein secretion in rat submandibular glands under certain conditions, particularly when stimulated by adrenergic and peptidergic agents.
  • In both in vivo and in vitro studies, somatostatin infusion increased protein release in response to noradrenaline and substance P, while it had no impact on isoprenaline-induced release.
  • The study suggests that somatostatin works by prolonging elevated cytosolic calcium levels in acinar cells after stimulation, boosting protein secretion.
