Acute renal failure secondary to medicinal plants is common in countries where the use of traditional phytotherapy is preponderant. Although the nephrotoxic potentials of some herbal preparations have been well characterized, the use of many medicinal plants is still considered largely safe, often relying on weak evidence. Here, we report the case of a 17-year-old patient with severe acute renal failure, associated to an esophagitis with erosive gastritis as well as an inflammatory anemia, with no obvious etiology.

Transport systems are developed to improve the solubility of the transported drug, increase its stability, enhance its pharmacological activity and target cancer while minimising side effects. In this work, nanoporous silica particles that can be functionalized and loaded with a large number of hydrophobic molecules are proposed. The designed system was modified with folic acid to target the folic acid receptors of cancer cells.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how well certain oxidative stress biomarkers can predict kidney graft function at 6 months and 1 year post-transplant, using data from patients who received living donor kidneys.
  • Blood samples were collected at various times after the transplant to measure levels of specific biomarkers, and renal function was evaluated using the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).
  • The findings suggest that measuring nitric oxide levels at day 6, along with donor age and eGFR at various points, can effectively predict graft function at the 6-month mark.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) represents an interesting modality for the elimination of damaged biomaterials and cells. This treatment takes advantage of the photosensitizing properties of molecules that are active only when irradiated with light. In the present work, a dual property of hypericin, a hydrophobic molecule with high performance in photodiagnostics and photodynamic therapy, was exploited.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the clinical biological and histological renal involvement secondary to familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), the epidemiological data, genetics of our patients and their evolution under treatment. We prospectively studied 58 Algerian patients admitted in our nephrology department from January 2012 to January 2021. The diagnosis of nephropathy was suspected clinically and biologically and confirmed histologically.
