Article Synopsis
  • Hand injuries are common emergencies often linked to domestic accidents and sports, and during the COVID-19 lockdown, while general medical activities dropped, hand and upper limb emergencies increased.
  • A retrospective study compared emergency consultations and surgeries from the same periods in 2019 and 2020, finding a notable decrease in elective surgeries and urgent peripheral limb surgeries but a steady or increased rate of hand emergency cases.
  • The study revealed an upward trend in domestic accidents as the primary cause of these injuries, alongside an increase in severity, indicating a need for a dedicated plan for handling hand trauma in emergencies, even amid reduced medical activities.
