Objective: Patient satisfaction with health care services is considered an important factor of health care. Although research on patient satisfaction has become standard in Western Europe, in countries such as Lithuania the concept of patient satisfaction is still a relatively new one. The authors analyse the results of medical examination of males aged 40-59 years in Moscow and Kaunas, divided into "respondents" and "non-respondents" in a population study of ischaemic heart disease. Among non-respondents, a higher incidence was found of such risk factors of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) as arterial hypertension, smoking, low physical activity and personality type A. On the other hand, hypercholesterolaemia was more frequent among respondents.

The results of a 7-year prospective follow-up of a representative sample of men aged 45-49 years living in Kaunas, who were initially examined within the framework of the Kaunas-Rotterdam Intervention Study, are presented. The relationship was investigated between systolic and diastolic hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia, smoking impaired glucose tolerance on the one hand, and mortality (total and from ischaemic heart disease) on the other hand.
