Background: Invasive disease caused by airway pathogens, including , , , and , has high morbidity and mortality worldwide, with immunodeficiency being a known association with recurrent disease. The study aimed to describe the frequency of known immunodeficiency and predisposing factors in adult patients presenting with invasive infections and determine the frequency of screening for and detection of immunodeficiency.
Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted at a large tertiary Australian health service, comprising multiple centers.
Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is an adhesion molecule, member of the immunoglobulin gene superfamily that seems to participate in the evolution of the metastatic process. We investigated the significance of baseline soluble ICAM-1 levels on the outcome of patients with small-cell lung cancer and whether soluble ICAM-1 is a predictive marker for objective response during and after chemotherapy in patients with small-cell lung cancer. Fifty patients with recently diagnosed small-cell lung cancer, as well as 27 healthy smokers, were enrolled.

Initially, it was reported in two cases of cryptogenic organizing pneumonia and was considered to be relatively specific of the disease. Since then, it has been reported in a wide variety of clinical entities, thus reducing its specificity.

The primary objectives were to determine nephrotoxicity, gastrointestinal side-effects, peripheral neuropathy and hematological toxicity and secondary objectives were to determine the response rate, time to tumor progression (TTP) and survival.
Patients And Methods: Two hundred and thirty-six chemotherapy-naive patients with inoperable non-small-cell lung cancer were randomly allocated to receive either 200 mg/m² of liposomal cisplatin and 135 mg/m² paclitaxel (arm A) or 75 mg/m² cisplatin and 135 mg/m² paclitaxel (arm B), once every 2 weeks on an outpatient basis.
