Dynamic representation of appetitive and aversive stimuli in nucleus accumbens shell D1- and D2-medium spiny neurons.

The nucleus accumbens (NAc) is a key brain region for motivated behaviors, yet how distinct neuronal populations encode appetitive or aversive stimuli remains undetermined. Using microendoscopic calcium imaging in mice, we tracked NAc shell D1- or D2-medium spiny neurons' (MSNs) activity during exposure to stimuli of opposing valence and associative learning. Despite drift in individual neurons' coding, both D1- and D2-population activity was sufficient to discriminate opposing valence unconditioned stimuli, but not predictive cues.

Introduction: The prevalence of germline pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants (P/LP) in high and moderate penetrance (HMP) genes is approximately 7%-10% among breast cancer (BC) patients. The prevalence and spectrum of BC P/LP variants are affected by several factors. There are limited genetic data from Brazilian patients with BC.

Accessibility of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon content in fishes from the region of the 2019 oil spill on the northeast Brazil coast.

In August 2019, Brazil experienced its largest large oil spill, which impacted extensive areas and significantly affected the northeastern region, particularly Pernambuco. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), major oil components, are critical for assessing fish contamination risks. This study presents two sample pretreatment methods for fish samples - ultrasound-enhanced air-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (UE-AA-LLME) for low molar mass PAHs, and matrix solid-phase dispersion for high molar mass PAHs - followed by a Gas-Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) detection.

Unlabelled: Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis of global distribution, capable of affecting both humans and animals, and caused by species of the genus spp. This study aimed to evaluate the genetic diversity and mating type distribution of clinical isolates of human sporotrichosis in Paraíba, Brazil, to better understand the population structure, epidemiology, and diversification of this pathogen, as well as to explore possible transmission routes.

Methods: A total of 36 clinical isolates were morphologically identified, and clinical and demographic data were collected.

Exploring immune memory traits in the social immunity of a fungus-growing ant.

The immune system is crucial for organisms to defend against pathogens. Likewise, analogous immune features evolved against similar pressures at the superorganism scale. Upregulating hygiene to the same fungus pathogen is one assumption for convergent immune mechanisms in social insects, although more evidence of immune memory features remains to be confirmed.
