Organic silver complexes are introduced where silver is linked either with a carboxyl group or with an amino group. Upon heating, nanoparticles are generated if the respective ligands are long enough to act as stabilizing agents in the nanoparticulate regime. With decomposition and volatilization of the organic material, the sintering of silver occurs.

As a result of neuronal cell loss in the hilar region of the hippocampus, it is proposed that mossy fibres sprout and re-innervate new regions of the dentate gyrus. We have conducted immunocytochemical, electron microscopic, and time-lapse experiments to visualize morphological consequences of local accumulations of B-50 at the plasma membrane of B-50-transfected PC-B2 cells, a clonal PC12 cell line with very low expression of endogenous B-50. The distribution of the transfected B-50 within these cells was inhomogeneous.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe involvement of the protein kinase C substrate, B-50 (GAP-43), in the release of glutamate from small clear-cored vesicles in streptolysin-O-permeated synaptosomes was studied by using anti-B-50 antibodies. Glutamate release was induced from endogenous as well as 3H-labelled pools in a [Ca(2+)]-dependent manner. This Ca(2+)-induced release was partially ATP dependent and blocked by the light-chain fragment of tetanus toxin, demonstrating its vesicular nature.

To elucidate the contribution of intrinsic properties to the regenerative capabilities of inferior olivary neurons, we have examined the cellular modifications occurring in these neurons following axotomy and target deprivation in the absence of exogenous growth-promoting influences. Axotomized inferior olivary neurons undergo perikaryal shrinkage, dendritic atrophy and a loss of anti-calbindin immunoreactivity.
