In the quest to model neuronal function amid gaps in physiological data, a promising strategy is to develop a normative theory that interprets neuronal physiology as optimizing a computational objective. This study extends current normative models, which primarily optimize prediction, by conceptualizing neurons as optimal feedback controllers. We posit that neurons, especially those beyond early sensory areas, steer their environment toward a specific desired state through their output.

A network of spiking neurons for computing sparse representations in an energy-efficient way.

Computing sparse redundant representations is an important problem in both applied mathematics and neuroscience. In many applications, this problem must be solved in an energy-efficient way. Here, we propose a hybrid distributed algorithm (HDA), which solves this problem on a network of simple nodes communicating by low-bandwidth channels.

[Influence of berotec inhalations on pulmonary gas exchange in patients with bronchial asthma].

Aim: To determine mechanisms inducing changes in lung gas exchange after berotec inhalation in patients with bronchial asthma (BA).

Materials And Methods: A study was made of external respiration function including estimation of lung transfer factor (TLCO sbh.) and its components--transfer coefficient (KCO), membrane diffusion capacity (DM), pulmonary capillary blood volume (Vc)--by the single breath holding method on CO in 14 healthy persons and 39 patients with BA before and after berotec inhalation.
