Use of Myriocin as co-adjuvant in glaucoma surgery: An in vitro study.

Mitomycin C as well as other antiproliferative drugs are off-label agents widely used to prevent the failure of glaucoma surgery due to activation of Tenon's fibroblasts and the ensuing excessive subconjunctival scarring. Though efficacious, these treatments are associated with some severe long-term complications, so it is crucial to investigate less cytotoxic compounds as adjuvant therapy in glaucoma surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect and potential cytotoxicity of Myriocin, a natural sphingolipid synthesis inhibitor, on TGF-β1-induced myofibroblasts transformation of human dermal fibroblasts.

DEXAMETHASONE IMPLANT VERSUS TOPICAL CARBONIC ANHYDRASE INHIBITORS IN PATIENTS WITH BILATERAL RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA-RELATED CYSTOID MACULAR EDEMA: A Prospective, Paired-Eye Pilot Study.

Purpose: To compare within-subject efficacy and safety of intravitreal dexamethasone implant and topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors in the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa-related cystoid macular edema.

Methods: Patients with bilateral retinitis pigmentosa-related cystoid macular edema were treated with intravitreal dexamethasone implant in one eye and topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors in the contralateral eye. The primary endpoint was a change in central macular thickness.

Phloroglucinol-Derived Medications are Effective in Reducing Pain and Spasms of Urinary and Biliary Tracts: Results of Phase 3 Multicentre, Open-Label, Randomized, Comparative Studies of Clinical Effectiveness and Safety.

Introduction: Pain and spasms of urinary and biliary tracts are conditions causing poor quality of life. Treatment with analgesic drugs such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and modulators of the parasympathetic system are not always tolerated, and often additional therapeutic options are necessary. The present analysis aimed to evaluate the pharmacokinetics and effectiveness of oral and parenteral preparations based on phloroglucinol in reducing pain and spasms associated with renal or biliary colic in phase 3, multicentre, open-label, randomized, comparative studies on clinical effectiveness and safety.

The reaction of cinnamaldehyde and cinnam(o)yl derivatives with thiols.

Spurred by the alleged relevance of the thia-Michael reaction in the bioactivity of various classes of cinnam(o)yl natural products and by the development of a quick NMR assay to study this reaction, we have carried out a systematic study of the "native" reactivity of these compounds with dodecanethiol and cysteamine as models, respectively, of simple thiols and reactive protein thiols that can benefit from iminium ion catalysis in Michael reactions. Cinnamoyl esters and amides, as well as cinnamyl ketones and oximes, did not show any reactivity with the two probe thiols, while cinnamaldehyde () reacted with cysteamine to afford a mixture of a thiazoline derivative and compounds of multiple addition, and with aliphatic thiols to give a single bis-dithioacetal (). Chalchones and their vinylogous C5-curcuminoid derivatives were the only cinnamoyl derivatives that gave a thia-Michael reaction.

Cataract and optic disk drusen in a patient with glycogenosis and di George syndrome: clinical and molecular report.

Background: We report the ophthalmic findings of a patient with type Ia glycogen storage disease (GSD Ia), DiGeorge syndrome (DGS), cataract and optic nerve head drusen (ONHD).

Case Presentation: A 26-year-old white woman, born at term by natural delivery presented with a post-natal diagnosis of GSD Ia. Genetic testing by array-comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) for DGS was required because of her low levels of serum calcium.
