Objective: Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPDs) accelerate the progressive impairment of lung function and general health. Together with maintenance therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and natural propolis have demonstrated pharmacological properties that address crucial pathophysiological processes underlying COPD and may prevent AECOPDs. This study aims at responding to dose-dependent efficacy and safety concerns regarding a propolis-NAC combination for the reduction of COPD exacerbation rates.

Objective: Standard treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) includes inhalation therapy along with mucoactive drugs. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of orally administered mucolytic N-acetylcysteine and propolis (NACp) in COPD patients.

Patients And Methods: A randomized, double-blind, prospective, interventional, 6 months study was conducted at the Institute for Pulmonary Diseases of Vojvodina, Sremska Kamenica, Serbia.

Endothelial defects significantly contribute to cardiovascular pathology in the premature aging disease Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS). Using an endothelium-specific progeria mouse model, we identify a novel, endothelium-specific microRNA (miR) signature linked to the p53-senescence pathway and a senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Progerin-expressing endothelial cells exert profound cell-non-autonomous effects initiating senescence in non-endothelial cell populations and causing immune cell infiltrates around blood vessels.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disorder that, especially in the early stages of the disease, is clinically difficult to distinguish from Parkinson's disease (PD). This study aimed at assessing the use of eye-tracking in head-mounted displays (HMDs) for differentiating PSP and PD. Saccadic eye movements of 13 patients with PSP, 15 patients with PD, and a group of 16 healthy controls (HCs) were measured.

Article Synopsis
  • Piperacillin/tazobactam (TZP) is used to treat severe multi-resistant infections but can cause complications like thrombocytopenia, a condition of low platelet count.
  • A 73-year-old man developed serious bleeding issues, including lung hemorrhage and diarrhea, despite having normal platelet counts and coagulation tests, indicating a rare case of platelet dysfunction caused by TZP.
  • This case highlights that TZP can induce bleeding through mechanisms other than thrombocytopenia, emphasizing the importance of platelet functional tests for proper diagnosis.
