The intramolecular [4+4] photodimerization of anthracene chromophores in covalent assemblies can be harnessed to create negative photochromic systems. This paper reports the characterization of the photophysical and photochemical properties of a new class of asymmetric phenyl-linked bis(anthracene) photochromes and compares their behavior with that of a previously studied symmetric ethylene-linked analog. Steady-state and femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopic experiments show that both types of bis(anthracenes) support a neutral bright state along with a lower-energy charge resonance state.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has become a critical intervention for managing advanced Parkinson's disease (PD), particularly for patients whose symptoms are no longer controlled by medication. This report details the case of a 61-year-old male with PD who experienced electrode displacement due to pneumocephalus following DBS surgery targeting the subthalamic nucleus (STN). Initial imaging revealed a significant subdural air volume causing electrode displacement.

Nitro-fatty acids (NO2-FAs) have emerged as key components of nitric oxide (NO) signaling in eukaryotes. We previously described how nitro-linolenic acid (NO2-Ln), the major NO2-FA detected in plants, regulates S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) levels in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain undefined.

The synthesis, electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, photophysical and light induced electron transfer reactions in two new anthanthrene quinodimethanes have been studied and analyzed in the context of dynamic electrochemistry. Their properties are dependent on the interconversion between folded and twisted forms, which are separated by a relatively small energy range, thus allowing to explore their interconversion by variable temperature measurements. The photophysics of these molecules is mediated by a diradical excited state with a twisted structure that habilitates rapid intersystem crossing.

Article Synopsis
  • Minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) is gaining popularity due to its benefits like smaller incisions and quicker recovery times, but online information about it often exceeds readable levels for patients.
  • A study assessed the responses from ChatGPT to 15 frequently asked questions about MISS, focusing on clinical appropriateness and readability as judged by three neurosurgeons.
  • Results showed that all generated responses had readability scores above the recommended levels for patient education, indicating they were difficult for average patients to understand, particularly for intraoperative questions.
