Despite the fact that recent decades have witnessed significant advances in treatment of patients with DeBakey type I acute aortic dissection, it still remains difficult to restore the aortic root when the dissection extends to the Valsalva's sinuses. Thinned aortic walls are vulnerable to traumatization on applying a vascular suture. We used in patients with this pathology the Florida sleeve technique in order to reinforce the weakened aortic root.

The paper presents an original approach to time-domain reflectance fluorescence molecular tomography (FMT) of small animals. It is based on the use of early arriving photons and state-of-the-art compressed-sensing-like reconstruction algorithms and aims to improve the spatial resolution of fluorescent images. We deduce the fundamental equation that models the imaging operator and derive analytical representations for the sensitivity functions which are responsible for the reconstruction of the fluorophore absorption coefficient.

A family of water-soluble colorimetric chemosensors incorporating an anthraquinone signalling subunit functionalized with a polyamine chain that bears hydrophilic diethoxyphosphoryl moieties was prepared with the aim of assaying metal cations. The outstanding UV-Vis absorption properties of the 1-aminoanthraquinone chromophore allowed the efficient visual detection and quantification of copper(II) ions by chelators L(1)-L(3) in buffered aqueous solution. Moreover, the visible response of L(2) is not interfered by addition of large excesses of 13 common metal ions, whereas chemosensor L(3) produces also a color change in the presence of equimolar amounts of lead(II).

A total of 265 patients suffering from infective endocarditis (IE) were operated on at the Center of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery. Of these, 20 patients presented with arterial embolism of the peripheral arteries of varying standing (from in-hospital episodes of embolism to 8 months). Embolism of the cerebral arteries was identified in 8 (3.
