Radiofrequency-assisted partial splenectomy: Histopathological and immunological assessment of the splenic remnant in a porcine model.

Background: Radiofrequency (RF) ablation has recently been expanded from palliative treatment into tissue-preserving surgery with controversial results. RF has been accused of septic complications and dysfunction of the target organ due to uncontrolled energy distribution. The aim of this study was to evaluate the short- and long-term implications of RF energy to the remaining splenic tissue after laparoscopic and open RF-assisted partial splenectomy.

Intracystic papillary carcinoma; solid variant in a male breast - case report and review of the literature.

A rare case of the solid variant of pure intracystic papillary carcinoma (IPC) in a 72-year-old male is described with a review of the literature. Currently, there is no clear consensus as to how this condition is best managed. Literature review demonstrates that this is an excellent prognosis tumour.

Modified radiofrequency-assisted liver resection: a new device.

Background: Radiofrequency ablation (RF) is emerging as new therapeutic method for the management of hepatic tumors. So far the RF-assisted hepatectomy has been described using an electrode initially designed for ablation of unresectable tumors. Herein, we describe a new technique for liver resection using a bipolar radiofrequency device.

Hormone receptor status in primary breast cancer--time for a consensus?

In a previous study, we demonstrated wide variability in the access to oestrogen receptor (ER) measurement, patient selection, choice of technique and the cut-off point for positivity. The aim of this study was to update information on the current use of ER and progesterone receptor (PR) measurement in the United Kingdom (UK). Questionnaires, asking about availability, use and technique of ER and PR measurement, were returned from 170 (74%) units in the UK.
