Background: Consanguineous marriage is a major contributing factor for many genetic diseases and a burden to the healthcare system and national economy due to costly long-term care. Earlier studies highlighted the significantly limited awareness of the higher prevalence of genetic disease due to consanguinity even among the educated Arabs. In Saudi Arabia, more than 50% of marriages are between first cousins.

Background: An autologous arteriovenous fistula (AVF) provides an optimal and secure way for managing the condition. An optimal blood supply to hemodialysis is linked to decreased incidence of complications and mortality, as well as reduced expenses. The objective of this research was to evaluate the outcome of people with suboptimal superficial venous system quality or who had exhausted all available arteriovenous fistula options, who received either autologous saphenous vein graft or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) interposition graft as an access for effective hemodialysis.

Article Synopsis
  • Nanoparticles, particularly silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), are being explored as eco-friendly alternatives to traditional chemical control agents, with this study specifically focusing on biosynthesizing AgNPs using the peels of the tomato plant (Lycopersicon esculentum).
  • The synthesis of AgNPs was indicated by a color change of the tomato peel extract, and their properties were analyzed using various spectral and imaging techniques, revealing nanoparticles of around 186 nm in size and demonstrating high stability.
  • The study found Le-AgNPs effective against bacteria and fungi, particularly inhibiting Bacillus subtilis and Alternaria solani, while also noting the cytotoxic effects at certain concentrations.

Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell therapies (CAR-T) are effective in many hematologic malignancies; however, adverse events including cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) can affect a significant number of patients. Those who develop refractory CRS or ICANS have few treatment options. Siltuximab, a monoclonal antibody binding circulating IL-6, has been proposed to have clinical activity in both CRS and ICANS.
