Understanding Speech-Language Pathology and Surgical Interventions for Exercise-Induced Laryngeal Obstruction.

This review provides an overview of existing data from the literature summarizing therapies for exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO) with 2 main areas of focus. We discuss the role of speech-language pathologists in the assessment and treatment of EILO and an overview of different respiratory retraining techniques used in the behavioral management of the disease. We then discuss the role and some of the technical specifics of supraglottoplasty (SGP) for refractory supraglottic EILO, including patient selection and similarities between SGPs performed for EILO and for infants with laryngomalacia.

Rational design, synthesis and pharmacological characterization of novel aminopeptidase A inhibitors.

Aminopeptidase A (APA) is a membrane-bound zinc metallopeptidase involved in the production of angiotensin III, one effector peptide of the brain renin-angiotensin system, making brain APA a relevant pharmacological target for the development of novel therapeutic treatments against hypertension and heart failure. The structure-based design of new APA inhibitors is described, based on previously developed thiol-containing inhibitors and APA crystal structure. Chemical synthesis, in vitro assessment against APA activity, pharmacological and pharmacokinetic profiling were performed, ultimately leading to a potent and selective APA inhibitor.

Connected health services: Health professionals' role as seen by parents of a child with inflammatory bowel disease.

Objective: Connected health services will change the scope of health professionals' roles. It is unclear how parents of a child with inflammatory bowel disease perceive the role of health professionals in relation to these services and what their experiences and needs are. The purpose of this study is to highlight parents' experiences with this role.

Comparing the complexity of written and molecular symbolic systems.

Symbolic systems (SSs) are uniquely products of living systems, such that symbolism and life may be inextricably intertwined phenomena. Within a given SS, there is a range of symbol complexity over which signaling is functionally optimized. This range exists relative to a complex and potentially infinitely large background of latent, unused symbol space.

Pre-Existing Atrial Fibrillation in Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19: Insights from the CARDIO COVID 19-20 Registry.

Pre-existing (chronic) atrial fibrillation (AF) has been identified as a risk factor for cardiovascular complications and mortality in patients with COVID-19; however, evidence in Latin America (LATAM) is scarce. This prospective and multicenter study from the CARDIO COVID 19-20 database includes hospitalized adults with COVID-19 from 14 countries in LATAM. A parsimonious logistic regression model was used to identify the main factors associated with mortality in a simulated case-control setting comparing patients with a history of AF to those without.
