Optochin (Opt) susceptibility is used largely for the identification of Streptococcus pneumoniae in diagnostic laboratories. Opt-resistant (Opt(r)) S. pneumoniae isolates have been reported, however, indicating the potential for misidentification of this important pathogen.

Production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) has been reported in virtually all species of Enterobacteriaceae, which greatly complicates the therapy for infections caused by these organisms. However, the frequency of isolates producing AmpC beta-lactamases, especially plasmid-mediated AmpC (pAmpC), is largely unknown. These beta-lactamases confer resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins and aztreonam, a multidrug-resistant (MDR) profile.

Introduction: The peritoneal cavity is the most common site of cerebrospinal fluid absorption in hydrocephalus treatment. Many distal catheter complications are the result of this type of treatment, and these have been extensively described in the neurosurgical literature.

Materials And Methods: In our study, six cases of distal catheter migration with visceral perforation and/or extrusion are presented: three through the umbilicus, two through the scrotum, and one through the anus.

Chronic ethanol ingestion has been associated with small intestine morphological changes, disrupted host mucosal defenses and bacterial overgrowth. Since bacterial translocation (BT) may result from such alterations, we have investigated the potential effect of chronic ethanol consumption on BT. For this purpose, male Wistar rats were fed a liquid diet containing 5% v/v ethanol for 4 weeks (EG, n=16), and a pair-fed group received equal daily amounts of calories in a similar diet without ethanol (PFG, n=16).
