Objectives: The complex life experience of speaking two or more languages has been suggested to preserve cognition in older adulthood. This study aimed to investigate this further by examining the relationship between multilingual experience variables and cognitive functioning in a large cohort of older adults in the diversely multilingual north of the Netherlands.
Method: 11,332 older individuals participating in the Lifelines Cohort Study completed a language experience questionnaire.

Objectives: To expand a translational pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PKPD) modelling approach for assessing the combined effect of polymyxin B and minocycline against Klebsiella pneumoniae.
Methods: A PKPD model developed based on in vitro static time-kill experiments of one strain (ARU613) was first translated to characterize that of a more susceptible strain (ARU705), and thereafter to dynamic time-kill experiments (both strains) and to a murine thigh infection model (ARU705 only). The PKPD model was updated stepwise using accumulated data.

Objective: To describe the 12-month mortality of Dutch COVID-19 intensive care unit patients, the total COVID-19 population and various subgroups on the basis of the number of comorbidities, age, sex, mechanical ventilation, and vasoactive medication use.
Methods: We included all patients admitted with COVID-19 between March 1, 2020, and March 29, 2022, from the Dutch National Intensive Care (NICE) database. The crude 12-month mortality rate is presented via Kaplan-Meier survival curves for each patient subgroup.
Background: It remains unclear whether repairing the deltoid ligament (DL) is beneficial in acute ankle fractures. The aim of this review is to critically review the developments in deltoid ligament repair (DLR) in ankle fractures over the course of 44 years.
Method: An electronic search was conducted on the PubMed and Embase database including comparative studies evaluating the effect of performing DLR in adults suffering from a closed acute ankle fracture with suspected rupture of the DL.

Background: White matter hyperintensities (WMH) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia but the functional significance of WMH in specific white matter (WM) tracts is unclear. We investigate whether WMH burden within major WM fibre classes and individual WM tracts are differentially associated with different neuropsychiatric syndromes in a large multicentre study.
Method: Neuroimaging and neuropsychiatric data of seven memory clinic cohorts through the Meta VCI Map consortium were harmonised.

Methods: In total, 2338 adult childhood cancer survivors (CCS) were cross-sectionally assessed for the prevalence of MetS, using the Lifelines cohort (N = 132,226 adults without a history of cancer) as references. The prevalence of MetS was clinically assessed using existing classifications, as well as an alternative method using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry fat% instead of waist circumference to define abdominal adiposity.

We performed Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) and LymphGen genetic subtyping for the HOVON84 (n = 208, EudraCT-2006-005174-42) and PETAL (n = 204, EudraCT-2006-001641-33) trials retrospectively combined with DFCI genetic data (n = 304). For all R-CHOP treated patients (n = 592), C5/MCD- and C2/A53-subtypes show significantly worse outcome independent of the international prognostic index.

Here, we quantify fatty acid biosynthesis metabolites and enzymes of the fatty acid synthesis pathway to determine how exogenous fatty acids inhibit fatty acid synthesis in Escherichia coli. We find that acyl-CoA synthesized from exogenous fatty acids rapidly increases concentrations of long-chain acyl-acyl carrier protein (acyl-ACP), which inhibits fatty acid synthesis initiation.
