Despite intense investigation on the subject, the information available on the antioxidant capacity of natural coumarins and furanocoumarins is controversial. In the present study the antioxidant capacity of 19 pure naturally occurring compounds, among which 5 coumarins and 14 furanocoumarins is determined, using both the coulometrically determined antioxidant capacity (CDAC) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). None of the coumarins and furanocoumarins assayed exhibited appreciable scavenging activity against the DPPH radical.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is recognized as an emerging zoonosis. Pigs and wild boars are considered the main reservoirs of zoonotic HEV-3 and HEV-4 genotypes. In Europe, autochthonous human cases of hepatitis E, mainly associated with HEV-3 and consumption of raw or undercooked pig and wild boar liver/meat, have increased over the last decades.

Introduction: Conventional three-lead ambulatory electrocardiogram recording (3L-AECG) is used for the quantitative diagnosis of arrhythmias. However, the lack of crucial information, such as QRS morphology and orientation, renders the 3L-AECG incomplete for planning electrophysiological interventions. The 12-lead AECG (12L-AECG) merges the temporal resolution 3L-AECG with the spatial resolution of the standard electrocardiogram (S-ECG).

Importance: Over 10 000 people with Chagas disease experience sudden cardiac death (SCD) annually, mostly caused by ventricular fibrillation. Amiodarone hydrochloride and the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) have been empirically used to prevent SCD in patients with chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy.

Objective: To test the hypothesis that ICD is more effective than amiodarone therapy for primary prevention of all-cause mortality in patients with chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy and moderate to high mortality risk, assessed by the Rassi score.

Introduction: Electrocardiography (ECG) remains a fundamental tool in cardiovascular diagnostics, frequently relying on System 1 thinking-rapid, intuitive pattern recognition (PR). However, this approach can be insufficient when dealing with complex cases where diagnostic precision is essential. This article emphasizes the importance of integrating System 2 thinking-a more deliberate, evidence-based approach-into ECG interpretation to enhance diagnostic accuracy and avoid clinical errors.

Neonicotinoids are synthetic, nicotine-derived insecticides used worldwide to protect crops and domestic animals from pest insects. The reported evidence shows that they are also able to interact with mammalian nicotine receptors (nAChRs), triggering detrimental responses in cultured neurons. Exposure to high neonicotinoid levels during the fetal period induces neurotoxicity in animal models.

Background: The voluntary interruption of pregnancy (VIP) remains one of the most contentious issues worldwide, subject to different legal frameworks and cultural interpretations. Access to VIP is considered a fundamental right for women, recognized by international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and supported by the United Nations. It is estimated that 40-50 million abortions are performed each year, of which about 75% are in developing countries.

Assisted reproduction techniques (ARTs) have given rise to novel, non-traditional family models. Still, among the various applications and approaches of 'medically assisted procreation' (MAP), the most divisive one undoubtedly is 'gestational surrogacy' (GS), also in light of the rising number of couples who have chosen it over the past twenty years. Another major implication of ARTs is the creation of intentional (or intended) parenthood in addition to genetic one: the genetic parent's partner is thus defined as the intentional (or second) parent, who by free choice, shares the family project with the genetic parent, even without any biological tie with the child.

Neurologic manifestations are an immediate consequence of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the etiologic agent of COVID-19, which, however, may also trigger long-term neurological effects. Notably, COVID-19 patients with neurological symptoms show elevated levels of biomarkers associated with brain injury, including Tau proteins linked to Alzheimer's pathology. Studies in brain organoids revealed that SARS-CoV-2 alters the phosphorylation and distribution of Tau in infected neurons, but the mechanisms are currently unknown.

Organ donation after euthanasia (ODE) is a complex procedure involving the patient, the family, and the medical staff. Most organ donations occur from patients declared brain dead, and healthcare professionals rely on surrogate decisions, or the possible expression of ante-mortem will. Organ donation from deceased individuals is thus feasible under rigorous conditions, while direct donation after euthana-sia is not possible.
