Saccharomyces cerevisiae, whose evolutionary past includes a whole-genome duplication event, is characterized by a mosaic genome configuration with substantial apparent genetic redundancy. This apparent redundancy raises questions about the evolutionary driving force for genomic fixation of "minor" paralogs and complicates modular and combinatorial metabolic engineering strategies. While isoenzymes might be important in specific environments, they could be dispensable in controlled laboratory or industrial contexts.

To study niche-adaptation, we identify changes in gene expression in three divergent yeasts grown in the presence of various stressors. Duplicated and non-conserved genes are significantly more likely to respond to stress than genes that are conserved as single-copy orthologs.

Microbial production of 2PE by phenylalanine bioconversion or de novo biosynthesis from sugar offer sustainable, reliable and natural production processes compared to chemical synthesis. Despite the ability of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to naturally synthesize 2PE, de novo synthesis in high concentration and yield remains a metabolic engineering challenge.

There is an increasing demand for anthocyanins, as food colorants and as health-promoting substances. Plant production of anthocyanins is often seasonal and cannot always meet demand due to low productivity and the complexity of the plant extracts.

Saccharomyces pastorianus is an aneuploid interspecific hybrid of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces eubayanus that has been domesticated for centuries and is used for the industrial fermentation of lager beer. For yet uncharacterised reasons, this hybrid yeast is far more resilient to genetic alteration than its ancestor S.

The properties of the antenna resonator, with and without additional SRRs, were examined using finite element method simulations (COMSOL Multiphysics). The simulation findings were subsequently confirmed experimentally, using a vector network analyser coupled to an antenna-loaded coplanar waveguide (CPW).

Ultrafast optical heating was used to modify the magnetic parameters of the multilayer, while the time resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect was used to probe its response. Although the probe signal is dominated by precession and winding of the exchange spring within the soft YFe(2) layer, reorientation of the DyFe(2) hard-layer magnetization is detected on time scales less than 100 ps.

We have identified the main mechanisms of modulation that correspond to the suppression of the superconductivity in the network by magnetic field and heat dissipation. Using the metamaterial fabricated from thin niobium film, we were able to demonstrate a transmission modulation depth of up to 45% and a bandwidth of at least 100 kHz.

Ar(+) ions have been implanted into Laves phase epitaxial thin films of YFe(2) and DyFe(2). Magneto-optical Kerr effect and vibrating sample magnetometry experiments show that the easy and hard axes of magnetization in both materials rotate through an in-plane angle of 90°, whilst the strength of the magnetic anisotropy remains unaltered. This is supported by OOMMF computational modelling.

Switching with only a few quanta of excitation per metamolecule, metamaterial's elementary building block, is the ultimate goal, achieving which will open new opportunities for energy efficient signal handling and quantum information processing. Recently, arrays of Josephson junction devices have been proposed as a possible solution.

In particular, it is argued that both the neutron scattering results and band structure calculations provide little support for the long-held view that the Fe 3d moments are constant across the REFe(2) series, and for the oft-used rule of thumb that the (57)Fe hyperfine field is proportional to the Fe magnetic moment. Nevertheless, it is argued that it is acceptable to employ a simple ferrimagnetic model, in which the free-ion moment is ascribed to the RE ion and a moment of μ(d) = μ(3d) + μ(5d)≈1.

The magnetic anisotropy parameters in [110] MBE-grown films of REFe(2) (RE, rare earth) compounds are not the same as those in the bulk. This is due to the presence of a shear strain ε(xy), frozen-in during crystal growth. In this paper, magnetic anisotropy parameters for [110] MBE-grown REFe(2) films, that directly involve the shear strain ε(xy), are presented and discussed.

We show that domain formation is promoted due to the efficient incorporation of mismatched excess vortices and vacancies at the corners of domain walls, which outweighs the energetic cost of creating them. Molecular dynamics simulations with a generic pinning potential reveal that domains are formed only when vortex-vortex interactions are long range.

We demonstrate the existence of history effects below the lower critical point and provide a full demarcation of the Bragg-glass phase. A pronounced symmetry is observed in the behavior of the phase lines, irreversible magnetization, and value of the magnetization jump near both critical points.

Our data show that the vortices become confined between the Cu-O planes below a well-defined temperature at which the effective size 2xi of the vortex core is approximately equal to the period of the Cu-O layers. This confinement strongly increases the vortex liquid freezing temperature.

Depression is a frequent and treatable disorder, but it is insufficiently recognized. A generally used classification system is lacking. In a consensus meeting the following terms were defined: a normal feeling of depression, depression as a symptom and depression as an illness.
