Objective methods for assessing perceptual image quality traditionally attempted to quantify the visibility of errors (differences) between a distorted image and a reference image using a variety of known properties of the human visual system. Under the assumption that human visual perception is highly adapted for extracting structural information from a scene, we introduce an alternative complementary framework for quality assessment based on the degradation of structural information. As a specific example of this concept, we develop a Structural Similarity Index and demonstrate its promise through a set of intuitive examples, as well as comparison to both subjective ratings and state-of-the-art objective methods on a database of images compressed with JPEG and JPEG2000.

Adrenomedullin (AM) is a multifunctional peptide expressed in the normal and malignant prostate, and in prostate cancer cells. To elucidate the potential role of AM in prostate cancer, we have transfected the human AM gene into PC-3, DU 145, and LNCaP prostate cancer cells. Northern blot, Western blot, and radioimmunoassay techniques confirmed an increase in the synthesis and secretion of the 6kDa mature peptide, in the AM-transfected clones.

Aim: To detect the expression of calcitonin-gene-related peptide (CGRP), adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), and serotonin (5-HT) in normal human lymph nodes and explore their influences on immune system.

Methods: The expression of CGRP, ACTH and 5-HT in the lymph nodes, including proliferative lymph nodes, were detected by SABC Immunohistochemical staining.

Dye-dilution imaging sequences were performed and time-density curves were constructed in elastomer vessel aneurysm models to demonstrate the effectiveness of coils and an asymmetric stent in disrupting standard vortex flow. Compared with the use of coils, the use of stents led to marked flow modification, as seen with imaging sequences, and substantially slower inflow, as indicated by time-density curves, owing to the low-porosity region of the stent that covers the aneurysm orifice. These flow examination results indicate that potentially favorable flow modification features can be created by using the described asymmetric stent design, the use of which may lead to alternative methods of image-guided endovascular cerebral aneurysm therapy.

Background: Promyelocytic leukemia zinc finger protein (PLZF) was initially identified by virtue of its fusion with RARalpha as a result of a variant t(11;17) chromosomal translocation that occurs in a small subset of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) patients. PLZF has been reported to have pro-apoptotic and anti-proliferative activity both in vivo and in vitro.

In our previous microarray analysis searching for genes differentially regulated by androgens in the rat ventral prostate, we identified GADD45gamma (growth arrest and DNA damage inducible, gamma) as one of the genes up-regulated by androgens. GADD45gamma was initially identified to be a gene involved in negative growth control and its overexpression induced cycle arrest and apoptosis in vitro. In this study, we showed that GADD45gamma was transiently up-regulated by androgens in the androgen-responsive human prostate cancer cell line LNCaP.

We have built new asymmetric stents for minimally invasive endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms. Each asymmetric stent consists of a commercial stent with a micro-welded circular mesh patch. Methods: Using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), one hundred and sixty-six regional lymph nodes obtained from forty-three patients with esophagus cancer without invasion of the tumor confirmed by histopathologic analysis (pN(0)) were studied for further detecting mRNA of Mucin1 (MUC1) gene and determining nodal micrometastasis. The ALP1 [aci-reductone dioxygenase (ARD)-like protein 1] gene was identified in a comprehensive cDNA subtraction aimed at identifying genes regulated by androgens in the rat ventral prostate. ALP1 is homologous to the ARD/ARD' that were discovered in Klebsiella pneumoniae as enzymes that have the same polypeptide sequence and differ only in their metal content. This family of proteins is evolutionarily conserved from bacteria to humans and is involved in the methionine salvage pathway.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between hepatic lipase activity and fatty degeneration of hepatocytes and explore the effects of tea polyphennols (TP) on the changes of hepatic lipase (HL) activity in rabbits with fatty liver.

Methods: According to serum cholesterol and triglyceride (TC) levels, 19 rabbits were divided into fatty liver group (FL, n=6) fed with high cholesterol diet, TP group (n=7) fed with high cholesterol diet and 20mug/g/d tea polyphennols everyday orally, control group (n=6) fed with normal diet. After 8 weeks, the levels of serum TC, HL activity, HL activity and malondildehyde (MDA) in hepatic tissue were detected, and the pathomorphology of hepatic tissue were determined in all rabbits.

We have reported the identification of approximately two dozen androgen-responsive genes, on the basis of their induction by androgens in the castrated rat ventral prostate, using PCR-based subtractive hybridization. The same prostatic cDNA samples were subjected to a modified subtractive hybridization, resulting in the identification of 21 new androgen-responsive genes, of which 14 were known and 7 were novel genes. To complement our subtraction study, we have used an Incyte rat cDNA microarray, consisting of 8951 known genes and expressed sequence tags, and found that 162 genes were up-regulated and 143 genes were down-regulated 2.

More than two dozen androgen-responsive genes were identified from the castrated rat ventral prostate on the basis of their induction by exogenous testosterone. One of the identified genes encodes a novel 886-amino-acid protein that was named prominin-like protein 2 (PROML2) because it shares 32% identity to prominin and prominin-like protein 1, a family of important plasma membrane proteins with five transmembrane domains. The rat PROML2 gene is expressed abundantly in the glandular epithelial cells of the rat ventral prostate.

Accurately evaluating the size of a neurovascular lesion is essential for properly devising treatment strategies.
