Spinal giant cell tumors (GCTs) management primarily involves surgical resection; however, the optimal surgical approach continues to be a subject of debate. This study aims to comprehensively compare the efficacy of en-bloc resection with that of control resection techniques, specifically intralesional curettage and piecemeal resection, in the treatment of spinal GCTs. A comprehensive search of English databases, including the Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, as well as Chinese databases such as the National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chongqing VIP (VIP), and Wan Fang, was conducted up to January 2024.

Background And Objectives: Markerless vision-based human pose estimation (HPE) is a promising avenue towards scalable data collection in rehabilitation. Deploying this technology will require self-contained systems able to process data efficiently and accurately. The aims of this work are to (1) Determine how depth data affects lightweight monocular red-green-blue (RGB) HPE performance (accuracy and speed), to inform sensor selection and (2) Validate HPE models using data from individuals with physical impairments.

Background: Three-dimensional (3D) visualization has become increasingly prevalent in orthopedic education to tackle the distinct anatomical challenges of the field. However, there is a conspicuous lack of systematic reviews that thoroughly evaluate both the advantages and drawbacks of integrating 3D with problem-based learning (3D + PBL).

Methods: A rigorous search of English databases (Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) and Chinese databases (National Knowledge Infrastructure: CNKI, Chongqing VIP: VIP, and Wan Fang) were performed up to July 2024 to identify relevant studies.

Strain sensors with high sensitivity and wide detection range are essential for meeting diverse applications, such as precisely monitoring the movement of patients with bone defects during rehabilitation. However, extending the sensing range without compromising sensitivity, particularly for small strains, remains a significant challenge for flexible sensors. Here, a strain redistribution strategy was employed to achieve wide-range and high-sensitivity monitoring of natural rubber (NR)-based sensors.

Bacterial infections and antibiotic resistance are global health problems, and current treatments for bacterial infections still rely on the use of antibiotics. Phototherapy based on the use of a photosensitizer has high efficiency, a broad spectrum, strong selectivity, does not easily induce drug resistance, and is expected to become an effective strategy for the treatment of bacterial infections, particularly drug-resistant infections. This article reviews antimicrobial strategies of phototherapy based on photosensitizers, including photodynamic therapy (PDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), and their combination.

In recent years, the significance of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification in the process of tumorigenesis has garnered substantial attention from researchers in the field. Among the myriad of factors involved, METTL3, which functions as an m6A methyltransferase, has emerged as a critical player in this context. This enzyme has been shown to participate actively in the regulation of RNA stability and expression across a diverse array of tumors.

Rationale: The aim of the study is to evaluate the clinical effects and feasibility on chronic distal radioulnar unstable joint (DRUJ) under wrist arthroscope triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) repair and reconstruction. The biomechanical characteristics of the recovery process after treatment were analyzed using finite element modeling.

Patient Concerns: A patient with chronic DRUJ instability was treated with reconstruction of the distal radioulnar ligament using the Adams Berger method.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on improving the stage prediction of kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) for better diagnosis, treatment, and patient prognosis using a new model called MLW-BFECF.
  • This model leverages multimodal gene datasets (RNA-seq, CNA, and methylation) and employs a dynamic cascade approach with voting techniques to enhance gene feature selection and reduce redundancy.
  • Experiments show that the MLW-BFECF model significantly outperforms previous methods, achieving a high accuracy rate of 88.92% in predicting KIRC stages.

Animal models of peripheral nerve injury (PNI) serve as the fundamental basis for the investigations of nerve injury, regeneration, and neuropathic pain. The injury properties of such models, including the intensity and duration, significantly influence the subsequent pathological changes, pain development, and therapeutic efficacy. However, precise control over the intensity and duration of nerve injury remains challenging within existing animal models, thereby impeding accurate and comparative assessments of relevant cases.

  • Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma (PSC) is a very rare form of lung cancer, representing only 0.1% to 0.4% of malignant lung tumors, which complicates knowledge around its clinical management and patient prognosis.
  • A 28-year-old woman was misdiagnosed with Whipple's disease but was later correctly diagnosed with PSC after detailed clinical assessment and imaging, revealing significant lung abnormalities.
  • The patient underwent treatment with doxorubicin and ifosfamide, achieving stable disease, highlighting the importance of thorough histological examination and advanced diagnostic techniques in identifying this challenging tumor type.

Closed-loop sleep modulation is an emerging research paradigm to treat sleep disorders and enhance sleep benefits. However, two major barriers hinder the widespread application of this research paradigm. First, subjects often need to be wire-connected to rack-mount instrumentation for data acquisition, which negatively affects sleep quality.

Article Synopsis
  • Problem-based learning (PBL) in orthopaedics education shows significant advantages over traditional teaching methods, leading to higher knowledge, procedural, and clinical skill scores among students.
  • A systematic review analyzed 51 randomized controlled trials involving 4268 patients, revealing that PBL enhances student interest and satisfaction while achieving better overall scores.
  • However, PBL also results in less learning time and increased study pressure, indicating a need for further research through larger, rigorously controlled studies to confirm these findings.

This paper presents an innovative, minimally invasive, battery-free, wireless, peripheral nervous system (PNS) neural interface, which seamlessly integrates a millimeter-scale, fascicle-selective integrated circuit (IC) with extraneural recording and stimulating channels. The system also incorporates a wearable interrogator equipped with integrated machine-learning capabilities. This PNS interface is specifically tailored for adaptive neuromodulation therapy, targeting individuals with paralysis, amputation, or chronic medical conditions.

Exosomes are membrane-bound extracellular vesicles released following the fusion of multivesicular bodies (MVBs) with the cell membrane. Exosomes transport diverse molecules, including proteins, lipids, DNA and RNA, and regulate distant intercellular communication. Noncoding RNA (ncRNAs) carried by exosomes regulate cell-cell communication in tissues, including adipose tissue.

Freezing of gait (FoG) is a debilitating symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). This work develops flexible wearable sensors that can detect FoG and alert patients and companions to help prevent falls. FoG is detected on the sensors using a deep learning (DL) model with multi-modal sensory inputs collected from distributed wireless sensors.

Logic-in-memory devices are a promising and powerful approach to realize data processing and storage driven by electrical bias. Here, an innovative strategy is reported to achieve the multistage photomodulation of 2D logic-in-memory devices, which is realized by controlling the photoisomerization of donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs) on the surface of graphene. Alkyl chains with various carbon spacer lengths (n = 1, 5, 11, and 17) are introduced onto DASAs to optimize the organic-inorganic interfaces: 1) Prolonging the carbon spacers weakens the intermolecular aggregation and promotes isomerization in the solid state.

An ultra-wide-band impulse-radio (UWB-IR) transmitter (TX) for low-energy biomedical microsystems is presented. High power efficiency is achieved by modulating an LC tank that always resonates in the steady state during transmission. A new clipped-sinusoid scheme is proposed for on-off keying (OOK)-modulation, which is implemented by a voltage clipper circuit with on-chip biasing generation.
