Daily energy expenditure (DEE) is the result of decisions on how to allocate time among activities (resting, commuting and foraging) and the energy costs of those activities. Dynamic body acceleration (DBA), which measures acceleration associated with movement, can be used to estimate DEE. Previous studies of DBA-DEE correlations in birds were carried out on species foraging below their thermoneutral zone, potentially decoupling the DBA-DEE relationship.

Hutchison's niche theory suggests that coexisting competing species occupy non-overlapping hypervolumes, which are theoretical spaces encompassing more than three dimensions, within an n-dimensional space. The analysis of multiple stable isotopes can be used to test these ideas where each isotope can be considered a dimension of niche space. These hypervolumes may change over time in response to variation in behaviour or habitat, within or among species, consequently changing the niche space itself.

Breast cancer remains the most common cause of cancer death among women. Despite its considerable histological and molecular heterogeneity, those characteristics are not distinguished in most definitions of oligometastatic disease and clinical trials of oligometastatic breast cancer. After an exhaustive review of the literature covering all aspects of oligometastatic breast cancer, 35 experts from the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Imaging and Breast Cancer Groups elaborated a Delphi questionnaire aimed at offering consensus recommendations, including oligometastatic breast cancer definition, optimal diagnostic pathways, and clinical trials required to evaluate the effect of diagnostic imaging strategies and metastasis-directed therapies.

Final Results of a Phase I/II Trial of the Combination Bendamustine and Rituximab With Temsirolimus (BeRT) in Relapsed Mantle Cell Lymphoma and Follicular Lymphoma.

In this phase I/II study, we explored the combination of Temsirolimus with Bendamustine and Rituximab (BeRT) in patients with relapsed or refractory (r/r) follicular lymphoma (FL) or mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). Patients with 1 to 3 previous therapies received Bendamustine (90 mg/m, day 1 + 2) and Rituximab (375 mg/m, day 1) with Temsirolimus in doses from 25 to 75 mg in phase I and 50 mg Temsirolimus in phase II, added on day 1, 8, 15 of a 28 days cycle. The primary endpoint of the phase II was ORR at the end of treatment.

The measurement of fluid pressure inside pores is a major challenge in experimental studies of two-phase flow in porous media. In this paper, we describe the manufacturing procedure of a micro-model with integrated fibre optic pressure sensors. They have a circular measurement window with a diameter of 260  , which enables the measurement of pressure at the pore scale.

A 96-well microtiter plate (MTP) is positioned on the gadget's screensaver to provide white light-based bottom illumination only in the specific regions corresponding to the well's bottom. The images captured by the smartphone's back camera are analyzed by a novel image processing algorithm.

This article reveals a rapid sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the highly sensitive detection of human C-reactive protein (CRP) in less than 30 min. It employs a one-step kinetics-based highly simplified and cost-effective sandwich ELISA procedure with minimal process steps. The procedure involves the formation of a sandwich immune complex on capture anti-human CRP antibody-bound Dynabeads in 15 min, followed by two magnet-assisted washings and one enzymatic reaction.

Miniature stick-packaging--an industrial technology for pre-storage and release of reagents in lab-on-a-chip systems.

Stick-packaging of goods in tubular-shaped composite-foil pouches has become a popular technology for food and drug packaging. We miniaturized stick-packaging for use in lab-on-a-chip (LOAC) systems to pre-store and on-demand release the liquid and dry reagents in a volume range of 80-500 μl. An integrated frangible seal enables the pressure-controlled release of reagents and simplifies the layout of LOAC systems, thereby making the package a functional microfluidic release unit.

Dopamine receptors in the pituitary of the African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, were characterized using [3H]spiperone as radioligand. Specific binding of [3H]spiperone to pituitary membranes reached equilibrium within 60 min of incubation. The binding of the radioligand was tissue specific since the amount of binding was linear with pituitary membrane content in the incubations.

Schistosoma mansoni cercariae in water were shown to possess a largely aerobic energy metabolism, the Krebs cycle being the main terminal of carbohydrate breakdown. A metabolic transition towards a more anaerobic breakdown of carbohydrate could be achieved by incubation conditions which also stimulated biological transformation. Incubation of cercariae in a simple salt medium containing 5 mM glucose induced such a metabolic transition: beside carbon dioxide large amounts of lactate and pyruvate were excreted.

Plasma profiles of fourteen ovarian steroids before, during and after ovulation in African catfish,Clarias gariepinus, determined by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.

The plasma concentrations of fourteen ovarian steroids were measured in postvitellogenic African catfish,Clarias gariepinus, which had been injected with pimozide and LHRHa. Postvitellogenesis persisted for at least four hours after pimozide and LHRHa administration. During this stage a limited rise in the plasma gonadotropin (GTH) level was accompanied by an increase in the testosterone concentration.

The present in vivo study was carried out to investigate whether this inhibitory action of dopamine can be explained by an effect on the pituitary GnRH receptors. To that end, sexually mature female catfish were treated with dopamine and the dopamine antagonist pimozide (PIM), respectively.

Receptors for gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) were characterized using a radioligand prepared from a superactive analog of salmon GnRH (sGnRH), D-Arg(6)-Pro(9)-sGnRH-NEt (sGnRHa). Binding of(125)I-sGnRHa to catfish pituitary membrane fractions reached equilibrium after 2 h incubation at 4°C. Displacement experiments with several GnRH analogs as well as other peptides, demonstrated the specificity of(125)I-sGnRHa binding.

Quantitative analysis of steroids and steroid glucuronides in the seminal vesicle fluid of feral spawning and feral and cultivated nonspawning African catfish, Clarias gariepinus.

The seminal vesicles of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, can produce at least seven different steroid glucuronides, especially during the breeding season. In the present experiments quantification of the seven compounds and their free steroids was carried out by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in particular by selected ion monitoring, using seminal vesicle fluid of African catfish collected in the Hula nature reserve (Israel) and from a nearby fish farm. Some of the feral fish were in spawning condition; the others and the pond fish were in nonspawning condition.

The energy metabolism of Schistosoma mansoni during its development in the hamster.

A detailed study was made of the changes in the carbohydrate metabolism of Schistosoma mansoni occurring during both the penetration of the skin of a hamster and the subsequent development of the schistosome in the lung, liver, and mesenteric veins of the host. During infection, within a few hours a transition occurs from a fully aerobic to a largely anaerobic energy metabolism. By 5 h postinfection, about 6% of carbohydrate breakdown occurs in the aerobic reactions of the Krebs cycle, whereas the rest occurs in the anaerobic formation of lactate.

Immunocytochemical evidence for peptidergic (GnRH) and dopaminergic innervation of the gonadotropic cells in the pituitary of the African catfish, Clarias gariepinus.

The proximal pars distalis (PPD) of the pituitary of the African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, was studied with immunocytochemical methods at the ultrastructural level. Anti-serum raised against synthetic mammalian luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) was applied on Lowicryl-embedded pituitaries and the antigenic sites were visualized with protein A-gold. In nerve fibers contacting the gonadotropic cells, granulated vesicles with a diameter of 90-120 nm were labeled after this procedure, whereas the glandular cells were not labeled.
