Background And Study Aims: The COVID-19 pandemic substantially impacted the healthcare system and society in 2020. This study assessed its possible impact on occurrence and stage of colorectal cancer diagnoses in Belgium.

Methods: Population-based data from the Belgian Cancer Registry were used to extrapolate 2017-2019 trends in incidence and stage distribution to expected counts for 2020 that were subsequently compared to the observed values.

Redox flow batteries (RFB) often operate at extreme pH conditions and may require cooling to prevent high temperatures. The stability of the battery membranes at these extreme pH-values at high temperatures is still largely unknown. In this paper, a systematic screening of the performance and stability of nine commercial membranes at pH 14 and pH ≤ 0 with temperatures up to 80 °C is conducted in an organic aqueous RFB.

Background: Genetic variants of UGT1A1, involved in glucuronidation and clearance of bilirubin, are associated with reduced bilirubin metabolization and drug-induced isolated hyperbilirubinemia. We studied the impact of the UGT1A1*28 polymorphism on drug-induced isolated hyperbilirubinemia in metastatic renal cell carcinoma patients treated with pazopanib, cabozantinib, and axitinib.

Methods: We genotyped the UGT1A1*28 TA6/TA6-TA6/TA7-TA7/TA7 polymorphism and correlated with median baseline, on-treatment and peak bilirubin levels during therapy, incidence of grade-1- or -2 (G1/2)-hyperbilirubinemia and time-to-G1-hyperbilirubinemia.

Background: In Flanders (Belgium), women not screened for cervical cancer (CC) within the last three years receive an invitation letter from the regional screening organization, the Centre for Cancer Detection (CCD), encouraging them to have a cervical specimen taken by their general practitioner (GP) or gynecologist. However, the coverage for CC screening remains suboptimal (63%). The offer of a self-sampling kit (SSK, for HPV testing) by a GP may trigger participation among women who do not attend regular screening.

Early childhood is a critical period for structural brain development as well as an important window for the identification and remediation of reading difficulties. Recent research supports the implementation of interventions in at-risk populations as early as kindergarten or first grade, yet the neurocognitive mechanisms following such interventions remain understudied. To address this, we investigated cortical structure by means of anatomical MRI before and after a 12-week tablet-based intervention in: (1) at-risk children receiving phonics-based training ( = 29; = 16 complete pre-post datasets), (2) at-risk children engaging with AC training ( = 24; = 15 complete pre-post datasets) and (3) typically developing children ( = 25; = 14 complete pre-post datasets) receiving no intervention.

Despite their great versatility and ease of functionalization, most polymer-based nanocarriers intended for use in drug delivery often face serious limitations that can prevent their clinical translation, such as uncontrolled drug release and off-target toxicity, which mainly originate from the burst release phenomenon. In addition, residual solvents from the formulation process can induce toxicity, alter the physico-chemical and biological properties and can strongly impair further pharmaceutical development. To address these issues, we report polymer prodrug nanoparticles, which are prepared without organic solvents via an all-aqueous formulation process, and provide sustained drug release.

This case-control study aimed to investigate the association between short-term (1 to 5 days) and medium-term (31 days) exposure to air pollutants (PM, PM, BC, NO) at home/daycare and the risk of 'severe bronchiolitis' (defined as 'requiring hospitalization for bronchiolitis') in children under 2 years in Antwerp, Belgium. We included 118 cases and 79 controls admitted to three general hospitals from October 2020 to June 2021. Contracturing granulomatous myositis is a rare myopathy in which patients present with flexion contractures of the upper limbs in addition to slowly progressive muscle weakness and pain. Whether it represents a distinct nosological entity remains a point of discussion. We present a patient with isolated granulomatous disease of the muscle that responded very well to intravenous immunoglobulins after treatment failure of corticosteroids and methotrexate.
