The use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) is growing, both to assist individuals with infertility and for fertility preservation. Individuals with cardiovascular disease (CVD), or risk factors for CVD, are increasingly using ART. Thus, knowing how to care for patients undergoing ART is important for the cardiovascular clinician.

Suture Anchor Fixation of the Pediatric Posteromedial and Posterolateral Menisco-Tibial Ligament Complex Matches or Exceeds Native Tissue Strength: A Cadaveric Study.

Objectives: To compare the biomechanical strength and stiffness of the native posteromedial and posterolateral meniscotibial ligament complex (MTLC) to suture anchor repair of the MTLC.

Methods: Biomechanical testing was performed on 24 fresh-frozen pediatric human knees. Four conditions were tested: native posteromedial MTLC (n=14), native posterolateral MTLC (n=14), posteromedial MTLC repair (n=5), and posterolateral MTLC repair (n=5).

Third trimester fetal 4D flow MRI with motion correction.

Purpose: To correct maternal breathing and fetal bulk motion during fetal 4D flow MRI.

Methods: A Doppler-ultrasound fetal cardiac-gated free-running 4D flow acquisition was corrected post hoc for maternal respiratory and fetal bulk motion in separate automated steps, with optional manual intervention to assess and limit fetal motion artifacts. Compressed-sensing reconstruction with a data outlier rejection algorithm was adapted from previous work.

This study aimed to verify whether and how E values affect the stress distribution over the tooth and periodontium structures, and to determine the appropriate E range.

Background: Paediatric sarcomas, including rhabdomyosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma and osteosarcoma, represent a group of malignancies that significantly contribute to cancer-related morbidity and mortality in children and young adults. Molecular profiles of blood from numerous species that differ in sensitivity to acute inflammation.

Vertebrates differ over 100,000-fold in responses to pro-inflammatory agonists such as bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), complicating use of animal models to study human sepsis or inflammatory disorders. We compared transcriptomes of resting and LPS-exposed blood from six LPS-sensitive species (rabbit, pig, sheep, cow, chimpanzee, human) and four LPS-resilient species (mice, rats, baboon, rhesus), as well as plasma proteomes and lipidomes. Unexpectedly, at baseline, sensitive species already had enhanced expression of LPS-responsive genes relative to resilient species.

There are conflicting proposals about the underlying structure of the theory of mind (ToM) construct. The lack of clarity impedes attempts to understand relationships between ToM and other cognitive abilities. This study investigated the nature of the ToM construct and its relation to cognitive variables by administering a battery of ToM measurements along with measurements of executive function and general vocabulary to 207 (  = 19.

Dismal adherence to lung cancer screening in a diverse urban population.

Objectives: High-risk populations for lung cancer, including Black men and those with lower socioeconomic status, experience worse outcomes when treated. The mortality benefit of lung cancer screening cannot be realized without adherence to annual screening. Our study aims to understand annual adherence to lung cancer screening in a population traditionally experiencing health disparities, thus identifying lung cancer screening's impact on lung cancer disparities.

Gold nanoparticles as innovative therapeutics for oral mucositis: A review of current evidence.

Oral mucositis (OM) remains a debilitating side effect in patients undergoing cancer therapy. DNA damage and oxidative stress generated by radiation and/or chemotherapy activate key inflammatory pathways, ultimately resulting in the destruction of the epithelial barrier, leading to microbial colonization, and ulceration. These ulcerative lesions are often extremely painful, compromising nutrition and oral hygiene, requiring intravenous nutritional support, resulting in longer periods of hospitalization and increased cost.

Nephrology providers' perspective and use of mortality prognostic tools in dialysis patients.

Background: Mortality prognostic tools exist to aid in shared decision making with kidney failure patients but are underutilized. This study aimed to elucidate nephrology providers' practice patterns and understand barriers to prognostic tool use.

Methods: Nephrology providers (8 physicians and 2 nurse practitioners) at an academic medical center underwent semi-structured interviews regarding their experience and perspective on the utility of mortality prognostic tools.

Background: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the knee is a focal idiopathic alteration of subchondral bone and/or its precursor with risk for instability and disruption of adjacent cartilage. Treatment options focused on preventing premature osteoarthritis vary depending on multiple patient and lesion characteristics, including lesion mobility.

Purpose: To differentiate lesion mobility before arthroscopy using a multivariable model that includes patient demographic characteristics and physical examination findings.

Questions/purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine post-surgical outcomes in overhead athletes under the age of 35 who underwent primary biceps tenodesis for an isolated type II SLAP tear. We hypothesized that these patients would have high rates of return to play, as well as recovery of range of motion (ROM) and strength after surgery.

The population-level reductions in HIV incidence attributed to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) have not been fully realized among sexual, gender, and racial/ethnic minority youth. P3 (Prepared, Protected, emPowered) is a comprehensive mobile application (app) intervention developed to support PrEP adherence through gamification, medication tracking, and social engagement. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 246 young men who have sex with men (YMSM) and young transgender women who have sex with men (YTWMSM) currently on or planning to begin PrEP.

Background: Cardiothoracic surgery lacks gender and racial/ethnic diversity. Recent studies have highlighted disparities based on gender and race/ethnicity among academic cardiothoracic surgeons. The impact of the intersection of these factors on representation and salary is unknown.

Comparative specialization of intrinsic cardiac neurons in humans, mice and pigs.

Intrinsic cardiac neurons (ICNs) play a crucial role in the proper functioning of the heart; yet a paucity of data pertaining to human ICNs exist. We took a multidisciplinary approach to complete a detailed cellular comparison of the structure and function of ICNs from mice, pigs and humans. Immunohistochemistry of whole and sectioned ganglia, transmission electron microscopy, intracellular microelectrode recording and dye filling for quantitative morphometry were used to define the neurophysiology, histochemistry and ultrastructure of these neurons across species.

Guided Growth for Correction of Elevated Tibial Posterior Slope in Pediatric ACL Deficiency: A Case Report.

Case: Fourteen-year-old boy, history of autism presented with bilateral knee instability. Imaging revealed bilateral anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) insufficiency, 20° of posterior tibial slope (PTS) on the right and 18° on the left. A guided growth technique using anterior placed tension band plates was used to correct the PTS.
