Introduction Despite limited knowledge of its potential health effects, electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use has become increasingly popular in the United States (US). Cigarette smoking is linked to a higher risk of asthma, and e-cigarettes may have similar effects. This study's aim was to examine the association between e-cigarette use and asthma exacerbations in US adults with known asthma.

A breast cancer risk assessment tool for Asian populations, incorporating Polygenic Risk Score and Gail Model algorithm, has been established and validated. However, effective methods for delivering personalized risk information remain underexplored. This study aims to identify and develop effective methods for conveying breast cancer risk information to Asian women.

  • The study investigates the effectiveness of real-time versus intermittent monitoring for protecting critical nerves during endoscopic thyroid surgery.
  • Real-time monitoring significantly reduced surgery duration and rates of vocal cord paralysis and nerve injuries compared to intermittent monitoring.
  • The findings suggest that real-time monitoring is both feasible and beneficial for improving surgical outcomes in thyroid procedures.

Freshwater pearl farming is an emerging sector of aquaculture in Bangladesh which plays a growing role at major jewelry markets. With some improved techniques, high quality image or designer pearls are now produced from freshwater mussels . Yet it is difficult to reach in conclusion as the quantities produced, culture techniques used, and the upgrading of the existing culture technique are not well documented.

Vaccine hesitancy is an important feature of every vaccination and COVID-19 vaccination is not an exception. During the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine hesitancy has exhibited different phases and has shown both temporal and spatial variation in these phases. This has likely arisen due to varied socio-behavioural characteristics of humans and their response towards COVID 19 pandemic and its vaccination strategies.

The RNA exosome is a multi-subunit ribonuclease complex that is evolutionally conserved and the major cellular machinery for the surveillance, processing, degradation, and turnover of diverse RNAs essential for cell viability. Here we performed integrated genomic and clinicopathological analyses of 27 RNA exosome components across 32 tumor types using The Cancer Genome Atlas PanCancer Atlas Studies' datasets. We discovered that the gene, which encodes a barrel component of the RNA exosome, was amplified across multiple cancer types.

Many long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are localized in the nucleus and play important roles in various biological processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation and antiviral response. Yet, it remains unclear how some nuclear lncRNAs are turned over. Here we show that the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein H1 (hnRNPH1) controls expression levels of , a lncRNA involved in the formation of nuclear paraspeckles.

Molluscs are the most important resources among all the seafood items in South-East Asian countries. However, very little information available on nutritional value of molluscs in these regions. In this study, we evaluated the 7 economically important species of molluscs in terms of proximate composition, amino acids profile, fatty acids profile, cholesterol and heavy metal contents in the bivalves (mussels, oysters, clams and cockles) and univalve (snail) collected from freshwater and marine environments of Bangladesh.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between COVID-19 infection rates and various factors including air pollution, geo-meteorological data, and social parameters in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
  • It uses Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) and Geographic Information System (GIS) to analyze data, revealing that air pollution and social factors like population density and poverty significantly correlate with higher infection rates.
  • The findings suggest that local agencies can use this information to develop targeted strategies for managing COVID-19 and similar infectious diseases in urban areas, with plans for future research to incorporate additional variables.

Whole transcriptome analyses have revealed that mammalian genomes are massively transcribed, resulting in the production of huge numbers of transcripts with unknown functions (TUFs). Previous research has categorized most TUFs as noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) because most previously studied TUFs do not encode open reading frames (ORFs) with biologically significant lengths [>100 amino acids (AAs)]. Recent studies, however, have reported that several transcripts harbouring small ORFs that encode peptides shorter than 100 AAs are translated and play important biological functions.

Rationale: The recently reported acetone method for δ N-NO analysis is a straightforward sample preparation process. However, the applicability of the method to water samples having high salinity and low concentration of nitrates is not good. Therefore, we developed a new method to measure δ N-NO values in a saline sample having low nitrate concentration by improving the acetone method (the adapted method), and verified its usability.

Cryptococcal meningitis is being increasingly described in immunocompetent adults. We describe here a young immuncompetent adult of Indian origin from Ghana, West Africa with cryptococcal meningitis who had several ups and downs during his treatment. First he developed neurologic worsening due to premature transition from intensive to consolidation phase therapy.

Cytoplasmic mRNA degradation controls gene expression to help eliminate pathogens during infection. However, it has remained unclear whether such regulation also extends to nuclear RNA decay. Here, we show that 145 unstable nuclear RNAs, including enhancer RNAs (eRNAs) and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) such as NEAT1v2, are stabilized upon infection in HeLa cells.

Groundwater used for drinking has been contaminated with naturally occurring inorganic arsenic and other metals, and metal-contaminated drinking water is the biggest threat to public health in Bangladesh. Toxic metals present in the drinking water have a strong relationship with chronic diseases in humans. Antimony (Sb), a naturally occurring metal, has been reported to be present in the drinking water along with other heavy metals in Bangladesh.

Background: Chronic exposure to arsenic is associated with cancer and hypertension. Growing evidence suggests that altered methylation in long interspersed nuclear element-1 (LINE-1) is involved in many types of disorders, including cardiovascular disease. Here we evaluated the association between arsenic exposure and LINE-1 methylation levels, especially in relation to blood pressure (BP).

Although it has been widely recognized that hydrogen bonds play a significant role in the photophysics of molecules, this phenomenon has rarely been applied to the solvatochromic method for determination of dipole moments. The difference in the dipole moment between the ground and excited state was determined in protic and aprotic solvents using both the Lippert-Mataga equation and the Bilot-Kawski equation for bromocresol purple, a molecule capable of hydrogen-bond donation and acceptance. The dipole change in protic environments was determined to be 15.

Background: Oxidative stress is intimately associated with many diseases, including β-thalassemia.

Aim: The study was to estimate the status of respiratory burst enzymes, pro-oxidants, and antioxidants in β-thalassemia major patients in Bangladesh and to compare with apparently healthy individuals.

Materials And Methods: A total of 49 subjects were recruited which included 25 patients (age range 5 to 40 years) with β-thalassemia major and 24 controls (age and sex matched).

Background And Objective: Oxidative stress is intimately associated with many diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Study objectives include a comparison of the oxidative stress, antioxidant status, and lipid profile between COPD patients and controls and evaluation of the effect of spirulina intervention on oxidative stress, antioxidant status, and lipid profile of COPD patients.

Methods: 30 patients with COPD and 20 controls with no respiratory problems were selected.

This study aims to design epitope-based peptides for the utility of vaccine development by targeting outer membrane protein F (Omp F), because two available licensed vaccines, live oral Ty21a and injectable polysaccharide, are 50% to 80% protective with a higher rate of side effects. Conventional vaccines take longer time for development and have less differentiation power between vaccinated and infected cells. On the other hand, Peptide-based vaccines present few advantages over other vaccines, such as stability of peptide, ease to manufacture, better storage, avoidance of infectious agents during manufacture, and different molecules can be linked with peptides to enhance their immunogenicity.
