Adoption of the model for end-stage liver disease score by Organ Procurement and Transplant Network (OPTN) deceased donor liver allocation policy in 2002 has led to an increase in the number of simultaneous liver kidney (SLK) transplantation. Since kidney function recovery following liver transplantation is difficult to predict, allocation of the kidney for SLK transplantation thus far has not been based on much rationale and evidence. Lack of OPTN policy towards SLK organ allocation has resulted in great variations among transplant centers regarding SLK transplantation.

The Indian initiative, in creating mutant resources for the functional genomics in rice, has been instrumental in the development of 87,000 ethylmethanesulfonate (EMS)-induced mutants, of which 7,000 are in advanced generations. The mutants have been created in the background of Nagina 22, a popular drought- and heat-tolerant upland cultivar. As it is a pregreen revolution cultivar, as many as 573 dwarf mutants identified from this resource could be useful as an alternate source of dwarfing.

Aim: To evaluate the outcomes of transplanting marginal kidneys preemptively compared to better-quality kidneys after varying dialysis vintage in older recipients.

Methods: Using OPTN/United Network for Organ Sharing database from 2001-2015, we identified deceased donor kidney (DDK) transplant recipients > 60 years of age who either underwent preemptive transplantation of kidneys with kidney donor profile index (KDPI) ≥ 85% (marginal kidneys) or received kidneys with KDPI of 35%-84% (better quality kidneys that older wait-listed patients would likely receive if waited longer) after being on dialysis for either 1-4 or 4-8 years. Using a multivariate Cox model adjusting for donor, recipient and transplant related factors- overall and death-censored graft failure risks along with patient death risk of preemptive transplant recipients were compared to transplant recipients in the 1-4 and 4-8 year dialysis vintage groups.

Chemotherapeutic drugs exert systemic toxicity in lung cancer cells and therefore novel treatment strategies are warranted. Epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG), though possessing beneficial effects in alleviating cancer, its effect has been limited due to ineffective systemic delivery, toxicity and bioavailability. To attain the maximum therapeutic response of EGCG, we have synthesized bovine serum albumin (BSA) encapsulated magnetite nanoparticle (MNPs) loaded with EGCG (nano EGCG).

Objectives: Immunosuppressive therapy in kidney transplant recipients with hepatitis B virus infection may increase the risk of disease progression. Here, we compared outcomes of depleting (antithymocyte globulin/alemtuzumab) versus nondepleting (basiliximab/daclizumab) antibody induction in kidney transplant recipients at different serologic phases of hepatitis B virus infection.

Materials And Methods: We used the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network/United Network for Organ Sharing database to identify adult kidney transplant recipients at different serologic phases of hepatitis B virus infection (transplants received from 2001-2011 after patients received perioperative induction with discharge on calcineurin inhibitors/mycophenolate mofetil with/without steroids).

Background: Major changes to the teaching of anatomy associated with the integration of basic and clinical sciences in modern medical curricula have coincided with students reporting concern over achievement of learning outcomes in anatomy. Little guidance exists for medical educators designing anatomy courses that account for factors that positively influence medical student confidence in their own anatomy knowledge. We sought to determine what factors are associated with medical students' self-reported confidence in their anatomy knowledge in preparation for clinical practice.

Transcriptional downregulation caused by intronic triplet repeat expansions underlies diseases such as Friedreich's ataxia. This downregulation of gene expression is coupled with epigenetic changes, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Here, we show that an intronic GAA/TTC triplet expansion within the IIL1 gene of Arabidopsis thaliana results in accumulation of 24-nt short interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and repressive histone marks at the IIL1 locus, which in turn causes its transcriptional downregulation and an associated phenotype.

Palm fruit husk, a lignocellulosic material, is an agricultural solid waste. Since raw palm fruit husk does not adsorb V (V), it was subjected to surface modification with a cationic surfactant cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The surface-modified palm fruit husk showed adsorption capability for V (V).

Introduction This study was done to analyze the morphometric features of the inguinal canal with different types of inguinal hernias to determine the appropriate size of mesh required to cover potential sites of recurrence. A morphometric assessment in the particular population is essential to recommend the appropriate mesh size in inguinal hernias to cover all the potential sites of recurrence. Materials and methods This was a prospective observational study, including all consecutive patients undergoing open inguinal hernia repair under local/regional/general anesthesia over a period of three years.

Introduction Only a few studies compare the efficacy of the harmonic scalpel and electrocautery in performing mastectomies, and these have mainly compared their intraoperative parameters. But the main concern with electrocautery is the incidence of flap necrosis and seroma formation. Therefore, this study was done to determine if the harmonic scalpel has any advantages over electrocautery in reducing postoperative flap necrosis and seroma formation in patients undergoing a modified radical mastectomy (MRM).

Background: Cognitive dysfunction is reported to be a major cause of morbidity in chronic kidney disease (CKD). The senile plaques (SPs) in the brain are one of the most pathophysiological characteristics of cognitive dysfunction and its major constituent amyloid β (Aβ) released from amyloid precursor protein (APP) by β (BACE1) and γ (presenilin 1) secretases . Platelets contain more than 95% of the circulating APP and implicate as a candidate biomarker for cognitive decline.

Background: Donor final serum creatinine (SCr) is a dynamic variable and is 1 of 10 factors used in calculating kidney donor profile index (KDPI). We hypothesize that deceased-donor kidneys (DDKs) with higher SCr were likely accepted for transplantation if procurement biopsy findings were favorable and with long-term outcomes no worse than kidneys with lower final SCr within a KDPI group.

Methods: Using the Organ Procurement and Transplant Network/United Network for Organ Sharing database, we identified DDK transplant recipients from 2000 to 2015 who received induction and calcineurin inhibitor/mycophenolate mofetil maintenance.

Introduction Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the most commonly done, minimally invasive surgical procedure. Routinely used electrocautery produces more smoke, which masks the operating field, thereby prolongs the surgery and posing an increased risk of gallbladder (GB) perforation. The titanium clips used for clipping the cystic artery and cystic duct have a risk of slippage, which may lead to bleeding, and an increased risk for bile leakage.
