Artificial blood feeding of mosquitoes is essential for their rearing in insectaries as well as for mosquito-borne pathogen transmission experiments. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the different artificial feeding systems available for mosquitoes to synthesize evidence regarding their efficacy in terms of feeding rates and fecundity. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were systematically searched to retrieve 1,822 experimental studies assessing the efficacy of artificial feeding systems.

Background: Sepsis, a life-threatening condition characterized by a dysregulated immune response to infection, remains a significant clinical challenge globally. This study aims to enhance the predictive accuracy of existing sepsis severity scores by developing augmented versions of the SOFA and SAPS-III models, termed Pro-SOFA and Pro-SAPS, through the integration of biomarkers procalcitonin (PCT), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and C-reactive protein (CRP).

Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted in the medical ICU of a tertiary care hospital in southern India from August 2022 to December 2023.

Objectives: To study the impact of high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) vs. conventional oxygen therapy (COT) (by simple nasal cannula) as respiratory support after extubation on the rates of post-extubation airway obstruction (PEAO) among mechanically ventilated critically ill children.

Methods: This open-label randomized controlled trial was conducted in pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of a tertiary care teaching hospital in North India over a period of 7 mo (11 August 2021 to 10 March 2022).

New analogs of the PPAR pan agonist AL29-26 encompassed ligand (S)-7 showing potent activation of PPARα and -γ subtypes as a partial agonist. In vitro experiments and docking studies in the presence of PPAR antagonists were performed to help interpretation of biological data and investigate the main interactions at the binding sites. Further in vitro experiments showed that (S)-7 induced anti-steatotic effects and enhancement of the glucose uptake.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a disease of cattle that is also known to cause mild infection in buffaloes. To date, there have been no reports of LSD in mithun (Bos frontalis), a bovine species distributed in Northeast India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and parts of China. In the present study, the presence of typical clinical signs, virus isolation, PCR amplification, sequence analysis, and the demonstration of antibodies in serum by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and serum neutralization test, confirmed the occurrence of LSD in mithun for the first time in India.

Metagenomic analysis of and mosquitoes from diverse geographical regions of India revealed the presence of several insect viruses of human interest. Most abundant reads found in mosquitoes were of Phasi Charoen-like virus (PCLV), granulovirus (CfGV), Cell fusing agent virus (CFAV), and Wenzhou sobemo-like virus 4 (WSLV4), whereas WSLV4 and CfGV constituted the highest percentage of reads in viromes. Other reads that were of low percentage included Hubei mosquito virus 2 (HMV2), Porcine astrovirus 4 (PAstV4), and Wild Boar astrovirus (WBAstV).

Purpose: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common type of hair loss in humans, affecting self-esteem and emotional well-being. This study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of VISPO, a standardized saw palmetto oil (2-3% β-sitosterol), in subjects with mild-to-moderate AGA.

Methods: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, four-arm clinical study, 80 healthy male and female subjects aged 18-50 years were randomly allocated (1:1:1:1) to receive either 400 mg capsules of VISPO or 5 mL of a topical formulation containing 20% VISPO or the respective placebo once daily for 16 weeks.

Methylation of histone H3 lysine 9 (H3K9) is a repressive histone mark and associated with inhibition of gene expression. KDM3 is a subfamily of the JmjC histone demethylases. It specifically removes the mono- or di-methyl marks from H3K9 and thus contributes to activation of gene expression.

Carcinoma of the breast with apocrine differentiation also known as apocrine adenocarcinomas is special histological subtypes comprising approximately 1% of breast cancers. They are estrogen receptor/progesterone receptor-negative and androgen receptor-positive tumors having more than 90% population of tumor cells with apocrine morphology. We present a 49-year-old woman with a breast lump in the right upper outer quadrant clinically and radiologically diagnosed as malignancy and histologically proven as apocrine adenocarcinoma of the breast owing to the morphology comprising tumor cells having abundant granular cytoplasm, central to the eccentric nucleus and prominent nucleoli.

Background & Objectives: Sandflies are implicated as vectors of Chandipura virus (CHPV) (Vesiculovirus: Rhabdoviridae). The virus is prevalent in central India including Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. CHPV causes encephalitis in children below 15 yr of age with case fatality rates ranging from 56 to 78 per cent.

A massive outbreak of dengue-like illness was reported from Pune district of Maharashtra, India during May-June 2022. Isolation and characterization of the etiological agent at genomic level for possible mutations that led to higher transmissibility is the topic of the study. Entomological investigations were carried out by ICMR-National Institute of Virology (Pune, India); mosquitoes were collected and processed for virus detection by molecular techniques.

Article Synopsis
  • Mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti, carry numerous insect-specific viruses (ISVs) that are usually not harmful to humans but can evolve into potential human pathogens.
  • A study conducted in Pune, India found that the Phasi Charoen-like virus (PCLV) comprised over 60% of mosquito viromes, showing high genetic similarity to Brazilian PCLV isolates.
  • The research also noted PCLV's presence in various mosquito life stages and highlighted the need for further investigation into how PCLV may affect the transmission of harmful viruses like dengue and chikungunya.

Background And Purpose: This post-hoc analysis was performed to report the impact of Image guided intensity modulated radiotherapy (IG-IMRT) and three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) across organ system and grades of toxicity within PARCER trial (NCT01279135). Primary endpoint of PARCER focused on grade ≥ 2 late gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity using Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE). We now analyze all adverse events using CTCAE and time and severity weighted toxicity reporting method (MOSES).

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are the common health concern in populations across the world. Clinical evidence suggests that IBD, characterized by intestinal inflammation, is associated with neuronal manifestations to a greater extent. In this study, we have investigated the protective effects of Viphyllin™, a standardized black pepper (Piper nigrum) seed extract containing 30% β-caryophyllene against dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis in mice.

Nipah virus (NiV) is one of the priority pathogens with pandemic potential. Though the spread is far slower than SARS-CoV-2, case fatality is the biggest concern. Fruit bats belonging to genus Pteropus are identified to be the main reservoir of the virus causing sporadic cases and outbreaks in Malaysia, Bangladesh and India.
