The present study aims to generalize cultivar-specific tree phenology responses to winter and spring temperatures and assess the effectiveness of the Tabuenca test and various chill and heat accumulation models in predicting bloom dates for a wide range of climatic conditions and years. To this end, we estimated the dates of rest completion and blooming and correlated them with observed bloom dates for 14 peach and nectarine cultivars that were evaluated in 11 locations across Europe (Greece, France, Italy, Romania and Spain), within the EUFRIN cultivar testing trial network. Chill accumulation varied considerably among the studied sites, ranging from 45 Chill Portions (CP) in Murcia-Torre Pacheco (Spain) to 97-98 CP in Cuneo (Italy) and Bucharest (Romania).

Magnesium alloys are considered one of the most promising materials for biodegradable trauma implants because they promote bone healing and exhibit adequate mechanical strength during their biodegradation in relation to the bone healing process. Surface modification of biodegradable magnesium alloys is an important research field that is analyzed in many publications as the biodegradation due to the corrosion process and the interface with human tissue is improved. The aim of the current preliminary study is to develop a polymeric-based composite coating on biodegradable magnesium alloys by the solvent evaporation method to reduce the biodegradation rate much more than in the case of simple polymeric coatings by involving some bioactive filler in the form of particles consisting of hydroxyapatite and magnesium.

In recent years, iron oxides-based nanostructured composite materials are of particular interest for the preparation of multifunctional thin films and membranes to be used in sustainable magnetic field adsorption and photocatalysis processes, intelligent coatings, and packing or bio-medical applications. In this paper, superparamagnetic iron oxide (core)-silica (shell) nanoparticles suitable for thin films and membrane functionalization were obtained by co-precipitation and ultrasonic-assisted sol-gel methods. The present study is focused on the ultrafast and green synthesis, via the co-precipitation method, of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) based on iron oxides using design of experiments (DOE) and high energy sonochemical approach, considering two main factors: amplitude (energy) of the ultrasound probe and sonication time. The combination of these techniques allowed the development of a novel one-minute green synthesis, which drastically reduced the amount of consumed energy, solvents, reagents, time and produced residues. This green sonochemical synthesis permitted to obtain mean particle sizes of 11 ± 2 nm under the optimized conditions of amplitude = 40% (2826 J) and time = 1 min.

A multitude of recent studies have detailed microplastic concentrations in aquatic and terrestrial environments, although questions remain over their ultimate fate. At present, few studies have detailed microplastic characteristics and abundance along a freshwater-marine interface, and considerable uncertainties remain over the modelled contribution of terrestrial and riverine microplastic to the world's oceans. In this article, for the first time, we detail sedimentary microplastic concentrations along a River-Sea transect from the lower reaches of a major continental river, the River Danube, through the Danube Delta, the Black Sea coast to the Romanian and Bulgarian inner shelf of the Black Sea.

The study sheds light on the interaction between chitosan (Ch) and polyglycidol (PGL) and uses their interpolymer complex in hydrophilic coating of iron oxide particles (M). Preliminary investigations were performed by modeling chitosan and polyglycidol chains interactions using coarse grained beads approximation and molecular dynamics simulations. The results revealed that Ch and PGL chains associate together forming weak strength complexes, which was experimentally confirmed by surface tension, fluorescence and FTIR.

We demonstrate a new biosensing concept with impact on the development of rapid, point of need cell based sensing with boosted sensitivity and wide relevance for bioanalysis. It involves optogenetic stimulation of cells stably transfected to express light sensitive protein channels for optical control of membrane potential and of ion homeostasis.
