Purpose: Especially in elderly and multimorbid patients, Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) may result in severe pneumonia and secondary complications. Recent studies showed pneumothorax in rare cases, but tension pneumothorax has only been reported once.

Case Presentation: A 47-year-old male was admitted to the emergency department with fever, dry cough and sore throat for the last 14 days as well as acute stenocardia and shortage of breath.

In this study, concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) bound to PM10 particles were measured in a Croatian rural area. Considering that by now only a limited number of studies have provided data on pollutant concentrations for rural areas, our aim was to do so by determining the PAH levels, their mutagenic effect and relationship with meteorological conditions and other gaseous pollutants (NO, NO2, NH3). In this investigation, samples of PM10 particles were collected on quartz filters for 1 month in the cold period and 1 month in the warm period of the year, 24 h a day.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) originate from a variety of natural and industrial processes. In this paper, concentrations of nine PAHs in PM10 particle fraction were measured concurrently at four different sites (rural, urban residential, urban traffic, and residential-industrial) in continental Croatia. Measurements at all of the four sites showed much higher average concentrations for all of the PAHs in the winter period.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in the PM(10) particle fraction collected at two different measuring sites in Zagreb, Croatia. In summer, concentrations of all PAHs at both sites were low. In winter, mass concentrations of all PAHs measured at southern site were much higher than those at north.

Mercury concentrations in air were measured at three measuring sites in the vicinity of a waste dump Jakusevec in Zagreb, Croatia over a 4-year period, from the beginning to the end of remediation. Measurements at the beginning of the remediation show that the concentrations of mercury at all three measuring sites were relatively high. Annual mercury mass concentrations in 2001 were between 17 and 445 ng m(-3).

Small-volume air samples (approximately 7 m3 per 24 h) of airborne PM10 particle fraction were collected on quartz fibre filters at two measuring sites in the vicinity of the gas field Molve in April and July 2006. It took five to seven days for each sample to collect and one month to collect five to seven samples. Mass concentrations of PM10 fractions were determined by gravimetry while PAHs were analysed using a HPLC with a fluorescent detector.

This paper presents daily, monthly and yearly variations of PAH mass concentrations measured in PM(10) particle fraction, collected at one measuring site in Zagreb air between 2001 and 2004, and seasonal differences in PAH mass concentrations in PM(10) samples collected from 21 March 2003 to 20 March 2004. Twenty-four hour samples were taken in the northern residential part of Zagreb using a low-volume (50 m(3)) sampler and glass or quartz filters. The analysis was performed using a high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) and fluorescence detector with changeable excitation and emission wavelength.

This paper presents the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) measured in all four seasons in suspended particulate matter (SPM) collected with a high-volume sampler on one measuring site in the northern part of Zagreb. About 30 samples of SPM were analysed for each season, including workdays and weekends and there were no differences amongst them. The concentrations of all PAHs were highest in winter and lowest in summer.

The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the research in the area of air pollution, carried out exclusively at the Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health and performed by the scientists of the Institute. For the past fifty years, air quality has been studied at work, in the ambient air of urban and industrial areas, and in various indoor environments without occupational exposure. Methods for sampling and measuring air pollutants have been introduced or developed and verified.

The aim of the investigation was to find a suitable approach for assessing inhalation exposure of urban inhabitants to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air. Personal exposure to PAHs of fifteen subjects, Zagreb inhabitants, was measured over a week in summer and again in winter. All subjects kept a diary of motion and activities and filled in a questionnaire on the characteristics of their fiat and household members.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are products of incomplete combustion of organic compounds in the environment or a consequence of human activities. They can be found in all environmental media. Although they are present in rather low concentrations they have been receiving increasing attention lately.

Samples of suspended particulate matter, collected at four sites in Zagreb during the heating season were analysed for the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Data were analysed with special reference to indicators of car traffic contribution the BghiPer/BaP and Cor/BaP ratios. Taking 1.

Twelve polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were measured in samples of airborne particles collected in the town of Zenica in the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina every third or fourth day throughout the year. The concentrations were especially high in winter when in addition to permanent industrial emissions those from individual heating systems were also present and when owing to climatic and orographical circumstances temperature inversions occurred more frequently. The profiles of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons i.

The aim of this investigation was to evaluate a simplified version of an HPLC method for the determination of PAH in suspended particles collected from small air volumes indoors, outdoors or in personal exposure measurements. The simplification consisted in: (a) collecting PAH by low-volume samplers; (b) extracting PAH ultrasonically; and (c) omitting separation of interfering substances before analysis by HPLC. The results show that the introduction of these modifications affords a considerable reduction in analysis time and solvent expenditure, without affecting the quality of measurement.

Whatman No. 1 filters impregnated with a 3% solution of oxalic acid in ethanol which are used for elimination of ammonia from the air stream before entering the absorber for collecting SO2, were tested for a possible application (a) in the spectrophotometric determination of ammonia with Nessler's reagent and (b) in the reflectometric determination of smoke. It was shown that impregnated filters were as suitable for the determination of ammonia as absorbing solution and as applicable for smoke measurement as untreated filters.

Carbon monoxide concentrations were measured in six shops situated in narrow busy streets of the city centre for ten days in winter and ten days in summer and correlated with the measurements simultaneaously performed at an outdoor background reference point. The correlation was significant for four out of six shops in winter, but not in summer. Day-to-day variations seemed to be influenced by gross contamination due to changing weather conditions whereas differences in concentration levels from site to site were strongly influenced by the proximity and density of traffic.

CO concentrations were measured in five kindergartens, one children's hospital and two homes for aged, practically without indoor sources, all situated in the city centre, for ten random days in winter and ten in summer. The indoor CO concentrations were the result of the distance from and the traffic density in the nearest street, of general pollution level, seasonal differences, day-to-day variations and daily cycle of air pollution, the vicinity of traffic having a dominant influence. Therefore location of institutions for sensitive population groups in old city centres within a block of houses seems to be a suitable solution as far as exposure to CO is concerned.

Simultaneous measurements of CO and respirable particles (RP) at outdoor network stations and of personal exposure in a sample of twelve volunteers were carried out during the winter and summer season of 1980/81 in order to evaluate how well personal exposure can be assessed from outdoor network station data. The results have shown that personal exposure of our subjects to both CO and RP is in best correlation with exposure at home where subjects spend in the average nearly 70% of their time. While personal exposure to CO can hardly be related to outdoor CO levels, personal exposure to RP is in fair agreement with simultaneously measured outdoor concentrations in winter (but not in summer).
