Poultry can be a sustainable source of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) through the bioconversion of dietary alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, 18:3n-3). However, this process is currently limited by the high n-6/n-3 ratio in poultry diets affecting the competition between n-6 and n-3 fatty acids (FA) for the same biosynthetic enzymes, and the rate-limiting Δ6 desaturase which act at both, the first and final steps of DHA synthesis pathway. Echium plantagineum oil (EO) is an unusual source of stearidonic acid (SDA, 18:4n-3) which bypasses the first Δ6 desaturase step potentially increasing n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) synthesis.

The effects of parity and somatic cell count in milk (SCC) threshold on the udder morphology, milkability traits, and milk composition was evaluated in 41 Canarian goats in mid-lactation. The animals were divided according to parity (1st, 2nd, and 3rd), and a SCC threshold of 2000 × 10 cells/mL in milk was set to evaluate the effect of this factor on the different measured parameters. Results showed that primiparous goats had the udder smaller and less distended than multiparous goats, but no differences were detected on milk flow parameters.

The public conversations on social media sites like Twitter (before X) reveal the polarized nature of HABs through nuanced language and sentiment. We report here the virtual screening design, synthesis and activity of eight new inhibitors of SphK1. For this study we used a pre-trained Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) combined with docking calculations. This exploratory analysis proposed nine compounds from which eight displayed significant inhibitory effect against sphingosine kinase 1 (SphK1) demonstrating a high level of efficacy for this approach.

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai (HT-HH) volcanic eruptions on January 13 and 15, 2022, produced a plume with the highest signal in stratospheric aerosol optical depth observed since the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991. Suites of balloon-borne instruments on a series of launches from Réunion Island intercepted the HT-HH plume between 7 and 10 d of the eruptions, yielding observations of the aerosol number and size distribution and sulfur dioxide (SO) and water vapor (HO) concentrations.

We measured submicron aerosols (PM) at a beachfront site in Texas in Spring 2021 to characterize the "background" aerosol chemical composition advecting into Texas and the factors controlling this composition. Observations show that marine "background" aerosols from the Gulf of Mexico were highly processed and acidic; sulfate was the most abundant component (on average 57% of total PM mass), followed by organic material (26%). These chemical characteristics are similar to those observed at other marine locations globally.

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) creation is a standard therapeutic procedure for the management of complications of portal hypertension. However, in small children, this procedure is infrequently performed because of technical difficulties owing to their small size and scarce information on outcomes. Introduction: The Alzheimer's Prevention Initiative Autosomal-Dominant Alzheimer's Disease (API ADAD) Trial evaluated the anti-oligomeric amyloid beta (Aβ) antibody therapy crenezumab in cognitively unimpaired members of the Colombian presenilin 1 (PSEN1) E280A kindred. We report availability, methods employed to protect confidentiality and anonymity of participants, and process for requesting and accessing baseline data.

Methods: We developed mechanisms to share baseline data from the API ADAD Trial in consultation with experts and other groups sharing data from Alzheimer's disease (AD) prevention trials, balancing the need to protect anonymity and trial integrity with making data broadly available to accelerate progress in the field.

Centered kernel alignment (CKA), also known as centered kernel-target alignment, is useful as a similarity measure between kernels and as a kernel-based similarity measure between feature representations. We prove that CKA based on a Gaussian RBF kernel converges to linear CKA in the large-bandwidth limit. The result relies on mean-centering of the feature maps and on a Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion (HSIC) identity.

A quantitative assessment of the embodied environmental impacts of infrastructures can provide initial guidance to industry practitioners and engineers at the outset of the construction projects. This study presents the applicability of the Environmentally Extended Input-Output Analysis as a pre-construction evaluation tool for quantifying the embodied environmental impacts of a small diversion dam in Spain. Seven impact categories are assessed from a production-based and consumption-based perspective identifying the main sectors and regions contributing to the environmental impacts.
