Clinical Features and Outcomes of Patients With COVID-19 Infection and Acute Kidney Injury Requiring Hemodialysis in an Intensive Care Unit: A Retrospective Study From a Tertiary Care Center in Eastern India.

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been observed that acute kidney injury (AKI) especially requiring intervention support of hemodialysis has notably increased mortality rates among COVID-19-positive critically ill patients; however, comprehensive data regarding this from India, especially the eastern territory, remains sparse. This study aims to outline the demographic, clinical, and biochemical characteristics, along with the outcomes, of these patients.

Methods: A retrospective study was performed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna, from March 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021.

A Challenging Case of Miliary Tuberculosis in Pregnancy.

Miliary tuberculosis (TB) is an uncommon yet severe condition that can pose substantial risks to pregnant women and their unborn child. This case study describes a 22-year-old pregnant female at 23 weeks of gestation presented with breathlessness, fever accompanied by chills, dry cough, and loss of appetite. With no significant comorbidities, her initial symptoms were inconclusive, leading to her initial diagnosis as a case of pyrexia of unknown origin.

Subacute Infarction of Recurrent Artery of Heubner Mimicking CNS Tumor With Correlative Brain MRI and 18F-FDG PET/CT Findings.

A 62-year-old man, previously treated for oral cavity carcinoma, presented with new-onset cognitive-motor symptoms. Brain MRI revealed a periventricular, avidly enhancing lesion in the right anterior basal ganglia and hypothalamus suspicious for a brain tumor, particularly CNS lymphoma. 18F-FDG brain PET/CT showed corresponding uptake suggestive of primary brain tumor, lymphoma, or metastasis.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae among children hospitalized in a tertiary hospital with community-acquired lower respiratory tract infections.

Purpose: In this prospective study incidence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) infection was investigated in children with community-aquired lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) using methods such as serology, nested PCR (polymerase chain reaction), and multiplex PCR analysis.

Ultrasound-guided transuterine coil embolization of a Vein of Galen malformation.

Vein of Galen malformations (VOGMs) are rare and complex congenital vascular anomalies that can lead to severe morbidity and mortality. Management predominantly focuses on postnatal endovascular interventions. However, these may not be feasible for fetuses with hemodynamic instability and high-output cardiac failure and may fail to prevent irreversible brain damage induced by prolonged compression by the venous varix, hemodynamic alterations and resultant potential ischemic injury.

Introduction: Ethnicity can influence susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection, hospitalisation and death. Its association with ongoing symptomatic COVID-19 is unclear. We assessed if, among a population followed up after discharge from hospital with COVID-19, adults from Asian, black, mixed and other backgrounds are at increased risk of physical and mental health symptoms.

Therapeutic Plasma Exchange in Hepatology: Indications, Techniques, and Practical Application.

It is sobering that many liver failure patients die in the absence of liver transplantation (LT), and reducing its morbidity and mortality urgently needs more non-transplant treatment options. Among the several artificial liver support devices available, therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is the only one that improves survival in acute liver failure (ALF) patients. In many other disorders, data on survival benefits and successful bridging to transplant is encouraging.

A Vocal Cord Polyp: An Atypical Case of Molluscum Contagiosum.

A 44-year-old patient presented with hoarseness of voice and a polypoidal lesion on the left vocal cord. Complete excision was done. To our knowledge, this is the second reported case of molluscum contagiosum of the vocal cords.

Assessing the Efficacy of Thoracic Erector Spinae Plane Block for Postoperative Analgesia in Lumbosacral Spine Surgery: A Prospective Quasi-experimental Study.

Background and aims Optimal postoperative care and analgesia are the key factors in the management of cases of lumbosacral spine surgery. The erector spinae plane (ESP) block is a recently evolving entity and has a dynamic role in postoperative pain management. However, its role in the management of pain in lumber spinal surgeries is still not clear, and the literature remains anecdotal.

Beneath the surface: DNA barcoding of shark fins in Singapore.

The global decline of shark populations, largely driven by overfishing to supply the shark fin trade, poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems. Southeast Asia, and particularly Singapore, is a key hub for the transit and trade of shark fins that contribute to the exploitation of these apex predators. Through the use of DNA barcoding techniques, this study aimed to determine what species of shark are involved in the Singapore shark fin trade.

The acceptability of wearable technology for long-term respiratory disease: A cross-sectional survey.

Few studies have investigated the acceptability of wearable technology in patients with long-term respiratory disease. We conducted a 24-item cross-sectional survey (September 2022-February 2023), developed using four common themes universal to previously described models of technology acceptance and social behavioural therapy, to explore the acceptability of wearable technology spanning the breadth of chronic respiratory disease. A total of 74 valid survey responses were analysed with 50 % aged 51-70years; 72 % female; 63 % white British ethnicity; 79 % having an income less than £50,000, and 93 % having at least obstructive airways disease.

Surveillance of ventilator associated pneumonia in a network of indian hospitals using modified definitions: a pilot study.

Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients receiving mechanical ventilation in India. Surveillance of VAP is essential to implement data-based preventive measures. Implementation of ventilator-associated events (VAE) criteria for surveillance has major constraints for low resource settings, which can lead to significant underreporting.

Collective Charge Excitations between Moiré Minibands in Twisted WSe_{2} Bilayers Probed with Resonant Inelastic Light Scattering.

We establish low-temperature resonant inelastic light scattering (RILS) spectroscopy as a tool to probe the formation of a series of moiré bands in twisted WSe_{2} bilayers by accessing collective inter-moiré-band excitations (IMBEs). We observe resonances in RILS spectra at energies in agreement with inter-moiré-band transitions obtained from an ab initio based continuum model. Transitions between the first and second moiré band for a twist angle of about 8° are reported and between the first and the third, and higher bands for a twist of about 3°.

Longitudinal Assessment of ROX and HACOR Scores to Predict Non-Invasive Ventilation Failure in Patients with SARS-CoV-2 Pneumonia.

Introduction: NIV (Non-invasive ventilation) and HFNC (High Flow nasal cannula) are being used in patients with acute respiratory failure. HACOR score has been exclusively calculated for patients on NIV, on other hand ROX index is being used for patients on HFNC. This is first study where ROX index has been used in patients on NIV to predict failure.
