Objective: To analyze results of 70 patients undergoing left hepatic trisectionectomy and to clarify its current role.
Summary Background Data: Left hepatic trisectionectomy remains a complicated hepatectomy, and few reports have described the long-term results of the procedure.
Methods: Short-term and long-term outcomes of 70 consecutive patients who underwent left hepatic trisectionectomy from January 1993 to February 2004 were analyzed.
Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and pressure perturbation calorimetry (PPC) were used to characterize thermal phase transitions, membrane packing, and volumetric properties in multilamellar vesicles (MLVs) composed of the polar lipid fraction E (PLFE) isolated from the thermoacidophilic archaeon Sulfolobus acidocaldarius grown at different temperatures. For PLFE MLVs derived from cells grown at 78 degrees C, the first DSC heating scan exhibits an endothermic transition at 46.7 degrees C, a small hump near 60 degrees C, and a broad exothermic transition at 78.

Small round-cell tumors (SRCTs), with malignant cell components measuring 10 m or less in diameter with scanty cytoplasm in alcohol-fixed smears, pose a diagnostic challenge at fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), especially when they are situated in and around the kidney and need facilities such as electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, tissue culture, and cytogenetics for their subtyping. A precise cytodiagnosis of SRCTs is important because a definite diagnosis is mandatory in preoperative diagnostic workup for presurgical chemotherapy in these cases. With this view in mind, an attempt has been made to diagnose SRCTs in the region of the kidney based on cytomorphology and morphometry alone so as to facilitate its diagnosis in a simple cytology laboratory of a developing country where facilities for auxiliary techniques are not easily available.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe interaction of left- and right-handed polylysine chains (poly(D-lysine) and poly(L-lysine)) results in a dramatic increase in the propensity to form aggregated beta-sheet structure (and amyloid-like fibrils), which is reflected by an approximately 15 degrees C decrease of temperature of the alpha-helix-to-beta-sheet transition. While a relative volume expansion of 13-19 mL x mol(-1) accompanies the alpha-to-beta-transition in a single enantiomer, this does not hold true for the mixture, which, along with substantially more negative heat capacity changes, points to a lower solvent-entropy cost of the transition as the possible thermodynamic driving force of the diastereomeric aggregation. The underlying solvational mechanism may be one of the decisive factors responsible for the spontaneous protein aggregation in vivo and, as such, may shed new light on the molecular basis of amyloid-associated diseases.

We find that this octapeptide behaves as a two-state system which undergoes the well-known inverse-temperature folding transition occurring at T approximately 36 degrees C, and, in addition, a slow trend reversal at higher temperatures, finally leading to a reentrant unfolding close to the boiling point of water. Furthermore, the pressure-dependence of the folding/unfolding transition was studied to yield a more complete picture of the p, T-stability diagram of the system.

Spatial patterns of various criteria air pollutants, like SO2, NO2, O3, and TSP were studied at Shahdara National Ambient Air Quality Monitoring station in Delhi (India) in July 1999. Antioxidant properties of water-soluble anthocyanin obtained from the carrot (Daucus carota) callus cultures were evaluated by the estimation of the amount of hydroperoxide formed by the autoxidation of linolenic acid at pH 2, 4 and 7. A major anthocyanin, cyanidin-3-lathyroside, was isolated and the antioxidant property was compared with malvidin, peonidin delphinidin and alpha-tocopherol. The malvidin, peonidin and delphinidin were obtained from grapes, Chinese mustard and egg-plant.
