Association of leukemia and mitochondrial diseases-A review.

Mitochondria play an important role in various metabolic pathways like oxidative phosphorylation free radical generation and apoptosis. Defects in mitochondrial function are responsible for a number of heterogenous clinical presentations along with development and progression of cancer. Decrease in cellular energy (ATP) production because of impaired oxidative phosphorylation is the most important cause for these underlying disorders.

Effect of effluent generated from coffee processing plant on the water bodies and human health in its vicinity.

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of wastewater produced from coffee processing plant on nearby water bodies and human health. A study was conducted around the coffee processing plant in Zimma zone (Ethiopia) to assess the physico-chemical characteristics of effluent generated from this plant. Analysis of the water samples taken from the surrounding water bodies had also been done.

Removal of fluoride, arsenic and coliform bacteria by modified homemade filter media from drinking water.

An attempt was made to investigate the removal of fluoride, arsenic and coliform bacteria from drinking water using modified homemade filter media. Batch mode experimental study was conducted to test the efficiency of modified homemade filter for reduction of impurities under the operating condition of treatment time. The physico-chemical and biological analysis of water samples had been done before and after the treatment with filter media, using standard methods.

COD and BOD reduction from coffee processing wastewater using Avacado peel carbon.

The aim of this study was the assessment of reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) of wastewater from coffee processing plant using activated carbon made up of Avacado Peels. The complete study was done in batch mode to investigate the effect of operating parameters. The results of the COD and BOD concentration reduction with avocado peel carbon (APC) and commercial activated carbon (CAC) were compared and optimum operating conditions were determined for maximum reduction.

Assessment of siltation and nutrient enrichment of Gilgel Gibe dam, Southwest Ethiopia.

Gilgel Gibe hydroelectric power dam was located in the submerging part of the Addis Ababa, Jimma highway in Ethiopia which is about 55 km far from Jimma was constructed in 2004. A cross-sectional study was conducted during 2005 to assess the siltation and nutrient enrichment level of the dam. It was found from the study that siltation and nutrient enrichment were the major problems in this reservoir.

COD and BOD removal from domestic wastewater generated in decentralised sectors.
