Nickel pyrovanadate (NVO) and compositing rGO in different concentrations with NVO are synthesized via the solvothermal process. XRD patterns reveal the formation of crystalline NVO and amorphous rGO in the nanocomposite. The morphology of the material resembles the formation of an NVO hollow nanosphere through a template-free synthesis route with the effect of ethylene glycol.

Tissue transglutaminase (TG2) is a multifunctional protein that can catalyze the cross-linking between proteins, and function as a G-protein. TG2's unregulated behaviour has been associated with fibrosis, celiac disease and cancer metastasis. Recently, small molecule irreversible inhibitors have been designed, bearing an electrophilic warhead that can react with the catalytic cysteine, abolishing TG2's catalytic and G-protein capabilities.

Article Synopsis
  • Neoadjuvant radiotherapy is crucial for treating locally advanced rectal cancer, and this study compares the quality-of-life outcomes between two techniques: three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT).
  • A phase II randomized trial involved 94 patients who received chemoradiotherapy and were assigned to either 3DCRT or IMRT; their quality of life was assessed using specific questionnaires throughout the treatment and at a six-month follow-up.
  • Although the trial ended early due to the futility of its primary endpoint, the results indicated that while emotional functioning improved, other aspects of quality of life declined; notably, IMRT showed better physical and role functioning during the final week

Small molecule targeted inhibitor therapies often have several drawbacks, including limited oral bioavailability, quick metabolism, toxic effects that limit dosage, and poor water solubility. This study aims to develop a nanodrug self-delivery system that does not require a carrier by utilizing the self-assembly of camptothecin (CPT) and dihydroartemisinin (DHA). CPT/DHA nanoparticles (NPs) with varying diameters can be synthesized without requiring further carrier materials or chemical modifications by changing the CPT-to-DHA ratio (10:1, 5:1, 2:1, 1:1).

Article Synopsis
  • Chloride levels, often overlooked in critically ill patients, can indicate serious outcomes, such as acute kidney injury (AKI) and major adverse kidney events (MAKE30) in those with sepsis.
  • In a study involving 400 sepsis patients, hypochloremia was found to be a significant risk factor for adverse kidney outcomes, with 32.3% of patients showing low chloride levels within 72 hours of ICU admission.
  • Conversely, hyperchloremia did not demonstrate any significant association with MAKE30 or worsening AKI, suggesting that low chloride levels are more critical to monitor in sepsis patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Haematological abnormalities, particularly post-transplant anemia (PTA), are common among renal transplant recipients, with a peak prevalence of 98% in the first week post-surgery.
  • Other issues included leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and pancytopenia, often caused by medications and infections.
  • Despite the high incidence of PTA initially, graft function was stable and similar among patients with and without anemia at six and 12 months post-transplant.

Objectives: The existing biomarkers used to promptly identify graft dysfunction after kidney transplantation lack consistency. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) appears to be a promising biomarker but its levels measured from serum and urine have demonstrated varying predictive values. Our study aimed to explore the potential of NGAL as a biomarker in predicting graft dysfunction in kidney transplant patients, including live and deceased donor recipients.

Plastics are ubiquitous in our ecosystems, and microplastic accumulation in the environment is an emerging global health concern. Since available recycling technologies are not economically competitive with primary plastic production, global use is expected to reach 1231 megatons by 2060, with 493 megatons leeching into the environment each year. To identify new nylon-recycling biotechnologies, targeted genome mining was used to identify thermostable enzymes capable of degrading polyamides.

Introduction: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk of developing tuberculosis (TB). These patients may also be at higher risk of developing antitubercular treatment (ATT)-associated adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Although dose modification has been recommended, data regarding the impact of impaired kidney function on ATT-associated ADRs is sparse.

The widespread use of polyamides such as nylons has led to the accumulation of nylon waste, which is particularly resistant to decomposition due to the intrinsic stability of the amide bond. New methods are required for the true recycling of these waste materials by depolymerization. Enzymes that are capable of hydrolyzing polyamides have been proposed as biocatalysts that may be suitable for this application.
