Heart (right) failure is the most frequent cause of death in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension. Although historically, increased right ventricular afterload has been considered the main contributor to right heart failure in such patients, recent evidence has suggested a potential role of load-independent factors. Here, we tested the hypothesis that resistin-like molecule α (RELMα), which has been implicated in the pathogenesis of vascular remodeling in pulmonary artery hypertension, also contributes to cardiac metabolic remodeling, leading to heart failure.

Endogenous miRNA expression patterns are extremely cell-type-specific, thereby offering high prediction accuracy for different cell identities. Here, a DNA-tetrahedron-based "AND" logic gate is utilized as a molecular device that recognizes dual-miRNA inputs through strand hybridization to activate a computation cascade that produces controlled singlet oxygen in live cells, resulting in the death of the target cell.

The species within the family Cunninghamellaceae are widely distributed and produce important metabolites. Morphological studies along with a molecular phylogeny based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) of ribosomal DNA revealed two new species in this family from soils in China, that is, sp. nov.

Clinical studies have suggested that internal and/or external aversive cues may produce a negative affective-motivational component whereby maladaptive responses (plasticity) of dural afferent neurons are initiated contributing to migraine chronification. However, pathophysiological processes and neural circuitry involved in aversion (unpleasantness)-producing migraine chronification are still evolving. An interdisciplinary team conducted this narrative review aimed at reviewing neuronal plasticity for developing migraine chronicity and its relevant neurocircuits and providing the most cutting-edge information on neuronal mechanisms involved in the processing of affective aspects of pain and the role of unpleasantness evoked by internal and/or external cues in facilitating the chronification process of migraine headache.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) contribute to malignant progression and chemoresistance in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). However, little is known about the underlying mechanism. In this study, we investigated the potential role and mechanisms of activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) in CAFs-induced malignancy and gemcitabine resistance.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematologic tumor with monoclonal proliferation of malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow. Fascin (FSCN) is an actin-binding protein that plays a crucial role in cell migration and invasion, contributing to tumor metastasis. There are three members () in family However, the prognostic role of family in MM remains unclear.

An experimental investigation of femtosecond laser through-hole drilling of stainless-steel 304 with and without transverse magnetic assistance was conducted. The characteristics of the through-hole geometry and sidewall as well as the chemical composition of the through-hole sidewall surface were analyzed. In addition, a theoretical analysis of magnetic-field-assisted femtosecond laser through-hole drilling is proposed.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a highly heterogeneous disease that requires fine-grained risk stratification for the best prognosis of patients. As a class of small non-coding RNAs with important biological functions, microRNAs play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of AML. To assess the prognostic impact of miR-20b on AML in the presence of other clinical and molecular factors, we screened 90 AML patients receiving chemotherapy only and 74 also undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database.

Damage to the blood-brain barrier (BBB) during the process of cerebral ischemic injury is a key factor that affects the treatment of this condition. The present study aimed to assess the potential effects of 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol (4-MA) on brain microvascular endothelial cells (bEnd.3) against oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/Rep) using an model that mimics ischemia/reperfusion injury.

White matter lesions known as leukoaraiosis (LA) are cerebral white matter hyperintensities observed in elderly individuals. Currently, no reliable molecular biomarkers are available for monitoring their progression over time. To identify biomarkers for the onset and progression of LA, we analyzed whole blood-based, microRNA expression profiles of leukoaraiosis, validated those exhibiting significant microRNA changes in clinical subjects by means of quantitative real-time polymerase chain reactions and determined the function of miRNA in cell lines by means of microRNA mimic transfection assays.

Accumulating evidence demonstrates that the cerebellum is involved in a variety of cognitive functions. Recently, impaired auditory-motor integration for vocal control has been identified in patients with cerebellar degeneration, characterized by abnormally enhanced vocal compensations for pitch perturbations. However, the causal relationship between the cerebellum and auditory feedback during vocal production remains unclear.

Experimental studies have indicated that prolonged ketamine exposure in neonates at anesthetic doses causes neuronal apoptosis, which contributes to long-term impairments of learning and memory later in life. The neuronal excitotoxicity mediated by compensatory upregulation of N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) is proposed to be the underlying mechanism. However, this view does not convincingly explain why excitotoxicity-related apoptotic injury develops selectively in immature neurons.

Wnt-Fzd signalling pathway plays a critical role in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) progression and oncogenicity. There is no study to investigate the prognostic value of Wnt and Fzd gene families in AML. Our study screened 84 AML patients receiving chemotherapy only and 71 also undergoing allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers collected over 1.8 million fungal sequences, identifying a high richness of 1,802 unique operational taxonomic units (OTUs), with Ascomycota being the most dominant group.
  • * The study found significant variation in fungal diversity based on location, particularly noting that Jinghe had the highest number of OTUs, while differences in fungal communities between growth stages were minimal, suggesting site-specific influences on fungal dynamics.

Although increasing intracellular proline under stressed condition could help the plants survive, treating plant with high level of proline under normal condition could be inhibitory to plant growth. Among other possible mechanisms, proline-induced mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production due to electron overflow in mitochondria electron transport chain (mETC) caused by elevated proline degradation may contribute to the proline toxicity. However, direct evidences are still elusive.

Sulfadiazine (SDZ) is an antibiotic frequently detected in soil and groundwater. The transport of SDZ in subsurface environment is a critical process affecting its retention in soil. To date, the effects of iron oxide and metal cation on the transport of SDZ remain largely unknown, so we investigated the transport properties of SDZ in cleaned and iron oxides coated quartz sand, as affected by the presence of conventional cations (Ca, Mg, K, and Na) and Cd through column experiments and simulation.

Famciclovir (FCV) is an antiviral drug that is often utilized after bone marrow transplantation to prevent viral infection. Yet, its role in hematopoiesis is poorly understood. Here, by utilizing a zebrafish model, we found that FCV exposure led to hematopoietic failure by impairing the proliferation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) and inducing HSPC apoptosis.

The merging of click chemistry with discrete photochemical processes has led to the creation of a new class of click reactions, collectively known as photoclick chemistry. These light-triggered click reactions allow the synthesis of diverse organic structures in a rapid and precise manner under mild conditions. Because light offers unparalleled spatiotemporal control over the generation of the reactive intermediates, photoclick chemistry has become an indispensable tool for a wide range of spatially addressable applications including surface functionalization, polymer conjugation and cross-linking, and biomolecular labeling in the native cellular environment.
