Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatic cancer has a very low 5-year survival rate of less than 5%, and the current treatment, gemcitabine, faces challenges due to the development of chemoresistance, especially influenced by nicotine in the tumor microenvironment.
  • The study investigates how nicotine contributes to this resistance in pancreatic cancer cells (PANC-1 and MIA PaCa-2) and explores the potential of Embelin, a natural compound, to counteract this resistance by enhancing gemcitabine sensitivity.
  • Results showed increased resistance markers in nicotine-treated cells, but Embelin significantly reduced cell viability and caused cell cycle arrests, suggesting its potential role as a chemosensitizer in overcoming nicotine-induced chemoresistance.

Article Synopsis
  • This systematic review aimed to evaluate the impact of nasal floor augmentation on the survival rates of dental implants by analyzing existing literature.
  • The review process followed PRISMA guidelines, searching databases like PubMed and Google Scholar for studies between 2000 and December 2021, ultimately including nine studies that met the eligibility criteria.
  • Findings showed that nasal floor augmentation techniques yielded high survival rates (100% in case reports and 89%-100% in comparative studies) without complications, suggesting it is a reliable treatment, but the authors stress the need for more extensive research due to limited existing studies.

Background: The burden of tobacco use is disproportionately high in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). There is scarce theorisation on what works with respect to implementation of tobacco control policies in these settings. Given the complex nature of tobacco control policy implementation, diversity in outcomes of widely implemented policies and the defining role of the context, we conducted a realist synthesis to examine tobacco control policy implementation in LMICs.

Inflammation is a complex biological response involving immune cells to an infection creating injury to the normal tissues. The anti-inflammatory efficacy of embelin, a benzoquinone from the plant , was screened for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan and Freund's adjuvant-induced inflammation models. Embelin exhibited significant dose-dependent antioxidant potential.

The National Health Policy in India mentions equity as a key policy principle and emphasises the role of affirmative action in achieving health equity for a range of excluded groups. We conducted a scoping review of literature and three multi-stakeholder workshops to better understand the available evidence on the impact of affirmative action policies in enhancing the inclusion of ethnic and religious minorities in health, education and governance in India.
