Background: Little is known about the roles of myeloid cell subsets in kidney injury and in the limited ability of the organ to repair itself. Characterizing these cells based only on surface markers using flow cytometry might not provide a full phenotypic picture. Defining these cells at the single-cell, transcriptomic level could reveal myeloid heterogeneity in the progression and regression of kidney disease.

Based on the co-crystal structures of LXRβ and its agonists (spiro [pyrrolidine-3,3'-oxindole] derivatives) discovered by us previously, we designed and synthesized a compound library to explore the agonistic activities. The library was screened with luciferase reporter assays, interestingly, it resulted in the discovery of 10 LXR inverse agonists besides 5 LXR agonists. To clarify the mechanism of the actions, we conducted molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on the LXR and inverse agonists complexes, and revealed that H3, H11 and H12 configurations are the key to turn on agonism or inverse agonism status for LXR.

Background: Phthalates are a group of heavily produced endocrine disruptors that are widely used in personal care products, food packaging, building materials, and medical device. Few epidemiological studies have examined the effect of repeated prenatal exposure to multiple phthalates on preschooler cognitive development.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the association between prenatal phthalate exposure measured at multiple time points and the intelligent quotient (IQ) scores of preschoolers, and to further identify the critical windows and specific intelligence domains in which phthalate exposure would affect preschooler cognitive development.

Introduction: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a common disease in critically ill patients that has a high incidence and mortality rate worldwide. At present, there is no specific treatment for ARDS. Traditional Chinese medicine has been shown to have good potential in preventing and treating ARDS, especially in reducing the dosages of Western medicines and therefore, adverse drug reactions.

Objective: Although previous studies have shown that screen time (ST), fast foods (FFs) and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) consumption are associated with depressive symptoms in adolescents, research on these associations in Chinese adolescents is scarce. This study aimed to examine the association between ST, FFs, SSBs and depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents, and explore the mediating effects of FFs and SSBs in the association between ST and depressive symptoms.

Methods: This school-based nationwide survey was carried out among 14,500 students in four provinces of China.

Core-shell-corona (CSC) micelles have multiple layers, which can serve as separate compartments. This property allows them to combine multiple functionalities in a single nanoparticle, with obvious application potential. Here, we propose a new type of CSC micelles with an apolar core and a polyelectrolyte complex shell incorporating coordination polymers.

Cardiac hypertrophy, including hypertension and valvular dysfunction, is a pathological feature of many cardiac diseases that ultimately leads to heart failure. Melatonin confers a protective role against pathological cardiac hypertrophy, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. In the present study, we hypothesized that melatonin protects against pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy by attenuating Atg5-dependent autophagy and activating the Akt/mTOR pathway.

Discovery and optimization of selective liver X receptor β (LXRβ) agonists are challenging due to the high homology of LXRα and LXRβ in the ligand-binding domain. There is only one different residue (Val versus Ile) at the ligand-binding pocket of LXRs. With machine learning methods, we identified pan LXR agonists with a novel scaffold (spiro[pyrrolidine-3,3'-oxindole]).

We demonstrate the use of a fiber delay line (FDL) to demodulate a weak fiber Bragg grating (WFBG) array. The FDL is composed of a fiber-ring cavity, by which the delay time is matched with the interval length of the adjacent WFBGs. Two pulses reflected by the former WFBG with delay and a pulse reflected by the rear WFBG without delay overlap and interfere.

The superior laryngeal nerve provides detailed sensory information from the mucosal surfaces of laryngeal structures superior to the vocal folds, including the valleculae. Injury to this nerve results in airway penetration and aspiration. Furthermore, such injuries might have an impact on the function of multiple structures involved in intraoral transport and swallowing due to connections within the brainstem.

For ordinal outcomes, the average treatment effect is often ill-defined and hard to interpret. Echoing Agresti and Kateri, we argue that the relative treatment effect can be a useful measure, especially for ordinal outcomes, which is defined as , with and being the potential outcomes of unit under treatment and control, respectively. Given the marginal distributions of the potential outcomes, we derive the sharp bounds on which are identifiable parameters based on the observed data.

Background: Enterohemorrhagic O157:H7 (EHEC O157) causes bloody diarrhea and hemolytic-uremic syndrome. EHEC O157 encounters varied microenvironments during infection, and can efficiently adapt to these using the two-component system (TCS). Recently, a functional TCS, RstAB, has been implicated in the regulation of virulence of several bacterial pathogens.

The human intestinal pathogen enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 causes bloody diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis, and fatal hemolytic uremic syndrome. Its genome contains 177 unique O islands (OIs), which contribute largely to the high virulence and pathogenicity although most OI genes remain uncharacterized. In the current study, we demonstrated that OI-19 is required for EHEC O157:H7 adherence to host cells.

There have been significant advances in capturing gigapixel panoramas (GPP). However, solutions for viewing GPPs on head-mounted displays (HMDs) are lagging: an immersive experience requires ultra-fast rendering while directly loading a GPP onto the GPU is infeasible due to limited texture memory capacity. In this paper, we present a novel out-of-core rendering technique that supports not only classic panning, tilting, and zooming but also dynamic refocusing for viewing a GPP on HMD.
