Pregnancy is a vulnerable time with significant cardiovascular changes that can lead to adverse outcomes, which can extend into the postpartum window. Exposure to emissions from electronic cigarettes (Ecig), commonly known as "vaping," has an adverse impact on cardiovascular function during pregnancy and post-natal life of offspring, but the postpartum effects on maternal health are poorly understood. We used a Sprague Dawley rat model, where pregnant dams are exposed to Ecigs between gestational day (GD)2-GD21 to examine postpartum consequences.

Article Synopsis
  • Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer and closely linked to H. pylori infection, with only 1-3% of infected individuals developing the disease.
  • Cigarette smoking increases the risk of gastric cancer, particularly in those already infected with H. pylori, but its effects on the bacterium's behavior are still unclear.
  • A study on mice showed that while cigarette smoke exposure did not change gastric inflammation significantly, it reduced inflammatory responses from H. pylori and increased DNA damage, potentially speeding up the onset of gastric cancer.

Comprehensive in-depth structural characterization of free mono-unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids often requires the determination of carbon-carbon double bond positions due to their impact on physiological properties and relevance in biological samples or during impurity profiling of pharmaceuticals. In this research, we report on the evaluation of disulfides as suitable derivatization reagents for the determination of carbon-carbon double bond positions of unsaturated free fatty acids by UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS analysis and SWATH (sequential windowed acquisition of all theoretical mass spectra) acquisition. Iodine-catalyzed derivatization of C = C double bonds with dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) enabled detection of characteristic carboxy-terminal MS2 fragments for various fatty acids in ESI negative mode.

Article Synopsis
  • Health-care practitioners need to learn how to talk to clients about unhealthy behaviors in a way that shows they care, which can help clients change these behaviors.
  • A study was done with university students in health-care programs to see if a special workshop on perspective-taking (understanding how others feel) would help them communicate better.
  • Out of 163 students, some took part in the workshop before talking to an actor acting as a client, but they didn't fully reach their goal for participation and practice opportunities weren't available for everyone.

Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer and the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Chronic infection by the bacterium is the most prominent gastric cancer risk factor, but only 1-3% of infected individuals will develop gastric cancer. Cigarette smoking is another independent gastric cancer risk factor, and infected smokers are at a 2-11-fold increased risk of gastric cancer development, but the direct impacts of cigarette smoke on pathogenesis remain unknown.

Studies have shown cerebrovascular dysfunction in offspring with full-gestational electronic cigarette (Ecig) exposure, but little is known about how individual trimester exposure impacts offspring health. This study aimed to determine if there is a critical window during gestation that contributes to vascular and anxiety-like behavioural changes seen with full-term exposure. To test this, rats were time-mated, and the pregnant dams were randomly assigned to Ecig exposure during first trimester (gestational day, GD2-7), second trimester (GD8-14), third trimester (GD15-21) or full-term gestation (GD2-21).

Article Synopsis
  • The long-term effects of electronic cigarette (Ecig) use on human health are still unclear, but existing research reveals that Ecig aerosols contain toxic compounds and can temporarily impair cerebral artery function.
  • In a study with rats, researchers found that exposure to Ecigs led to increased oxidative stress markers in the blood, which correlated with impaired blood vessel reactivity, lasting up to 3 days post-exposure.
  • Using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, the study highlighted a significant relationship between elevated oxidative stress levels and reduced blood vessel function, emphasizing the potential negative health impacts of even a single hour of vaping.

Endothelial dysfunction is a predictor for cardiovascular disease. Preclinical data suggest longstanding cardiovascular and cerebrovascular dysfunction occurs in offspring with perinatal electronic cigarette (Ecig) exposure. Furthermore, direct use of Ecigs increases reactive oxygen species and impairs cerebrovascular function, but the combined effect of direct use in offspring with a history of perinatal exposure (i.

Maternal mortality rates are at an all-time high across the world and are set to increase in subsequent years. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death during pregnancy and postpartum, especially in the United States. Therefore, understanding the physiological changes in the cardiovascular system during normal pregnancy is necessary to understand disease-related pathology.

Cathepsins (Cats) are proteases that mediate the successful entry of SARS-CoV-2 into host cells. We designed and synthesized a tailored series of 21 peptidomimetics and evaluated their inhibitory activity against human cathepsins L, B, and S. Structural diversity was realized by combinations of different C-terminal warhead functions and N-terminal capping groups, while a central Leu-Phe fragment was maintained.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is the world's leading infectious cause of death, killing millions every year. In Canada, considered a low-incidence country for TB, the burden of the disease is unequally distributed, with most cases of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) experienced by newcomers from endemic regions. The purpose of this study was to measure LTBI treatment acceptance and completion outcomes of LTBI treatment at the REACH clinic in Saskatoon, a local refugee clinic providing primary care-based LTBI management.

The hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) is the increase in breathing in response to reduced arterial oxygen pressure. Over several decades, studies have revealed substantial population-level differences in the magnitude of the HVR as well as significant inter-individual variation. In particular, low HVRs occur frequently in Andean high-altitude native populations.

As an orthogonal principle to the established (hetero)aryl halides, we herein highlight the usefulness of CFX (X = Cl, Br, or I) moieties. Using tool compounds bearing CFX moieties, we study their chemical/metabolic stability and their logP/solubility, as well as the role of XB in their small molecular crystal structures. Employing QM techniques, we analyze the observed interactions, provide insights into the conformational flexibilities and preferences in the potential interaction space.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) are customizable tobacco products that allow users to select e-liquid composition, flavors, and (in some devices) adjust wattage or heat used to generate e-cig aerosol. This study compared vascular outcomes in a conducting vessel (thoracic aorta) and a resistance artery (middle cerebral artery, MCA) in C57Bl/6 mice exposed to e-cig aerosol generated from either pure vegetable glycerin (VG) or pure propylene glycol (PG) over 60-min (Study 1), and separately the effect of using 5- vs. 30-watt settings with an exposure of 100-min (Study 2).

Despite claims of safety or harm reduction for electronic cigarettes (E-cig) use (also known as vaping), emerging evidence indicates that E-cigs are not likely safe, or necessarily safer than traditional cigarettes, when considering the user's risk of developing vascular dysfunction/disease. E-cigs are different from regular cigarettes in that E-cig devices are highly customizable, and users can change the e-liquid composition (such as the base solution, flavors, and nicotine level). Since the effects of E-cigs on the microvascular responses in skeletal muscle are poorly understood, we used intravital microscopy with an acute (one-time 10 puff) exposure paradigm to evaluate the individual components of e-liquid on vascular tone and endothelial function in the arterioles of the gluteus maximus muscle of anesthetized C57Bl/6 mice.

Despite the perception that e-cigarettes are safer than conventional cigarettes, numerous findings demonstrated that e-cigarette aerosol (EC) exposure induced compromised immune functionality, vascular changes even after acute exposure, and lung injury. Notably, altered neutrophil functionality and platelet hemodynamics have been observed post-EC exposure. It was hypothesized that EC exposure initiates an inflammatory response resulting in altered neutrophil behavior and increased neutrophil-platelet interaction in the pulmonary microvasculature.
