Wound-dressing materials with antibacterial activity from electrospun polyurethane-dextran nanofiber mats containing ciprofloxacin HCl.

Dextran is a versatile biomacromolecule for preparing electrospun nanofibrous membranes by blending with either water-soluble bioactive agents or hydrophobic biodegradable polymers for biomedical applications. In this study, an antibacterial electrospun scaffold was prepared by electrospinning of a solution composed of dextran, polyurethane (PU) and ciprofloxacin HCl (CipHCl) drug. The obtained nanofiber mats have good morphology.

Agenesis of premolar associated with submerged primary molar and a supernumerary premolar: An unusual case report.

The combination of submerged primary molar, agenesis of permanent successor with a supernumerary in the same place is very rare. The purpose of this article is to report a case of submerged mandibular left second primary molar with supernumerary tooth in the same region along with agenesis of second premolar in an 11-year-old girl, its possible etiological factors, and a brief discussion on treatment options.

Electrospun core-shell nanofibers from homogeneous solution of poly(vinyl alcohol)/bovine serum albumin.

We report on the preparation and characterization of core-shell structure of bovine serum albumin (BSA) blended poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite nanofibers by using electrospinning process. The core-shell structure nanofibers have been electrospun from the homogeneous solution of BSA (as shell) and PVA (as core). The morphology, chemical compositions, structure and thermal properties of the resultant products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques.

Silver-loaded biomimetic hydroxyapatite grafted poly(epsilon-caprolactone) composite nanofibers: a cytotoxicity study.

We report on poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) containing biomimetic hydroxyapatite (HA) and hydroxyapatite-silver (HA-Ag) composite nanofibers prepared via an electrospinning process for the biomedical applications. The morphology, structure and thermal properties of the PCL, PCL/HA and PCL/HA-Ag composite nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetry (TGA). SEM images revealed that the nanofibers were well-oriented and incorporated the HA-Ag nanoparticles well.

Preparation of photocrosslinkable polystyrene methylene cinnamate nanofibers via electrospinning.

Nanoscaled photocrosslinkable polystyrene methylene cinnamate (PSMC) nanofibers were fabricated by electrospinning. The PSMC was prepared by the modification of polystyrene as a starting material via a two-step reaction process, chloromethylation and esterification. The chemical structure of PSMC was confirmed by 1H NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR).

Barriers to discharge of patients from a government-run day-care psychiatric rehabilitation center in India.

Objective: Many psychiatric patients undergoing vocational training do not achieve successful transition to regular work. In this study, we evaluated the barriers for discharge from day care center to actual work place.

Materials And Methods: In a cross-sectional study at a government-run day-care center at National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore, we studied 76 patients who were undergoing vocational training for more than 1 year.

Impacted mandibular permanent incisors related to supernumerary teeth: a rare condition.

Supernumerary permanent teeth in the mandibular incisor area are rare, and there are very few reported cases of the supernumerary teeth in the mandibular incisor area leading to impaction of incisors. A south Indian boy aged 14 presented with 3 supernumerary teeth in the mandibular right permanent incisor area resulting in impacted permanent central and lateral incisors.

Efficacy of various disinfectants on microbially contaminated toothbrushes due to brushing.

Aims: To evaluate the effectiveness of different disinfectant agents in decontaminating the toothbrushes, and to educate the children, parents and the community on the decontamination of toothbrushes.

Materials And Methods: Fifty healthy male children in the age range of 8-11 years were enrolled. They were divided into five groups of 10 each and provided with toothbrushes and disinfectants.

Expressed emotion and caregiver burden in patients with schizophrenia.

Background: Family's expressed emotion has been shown to be predictive of outcome in mental and physical illnesses in a variety of cultural settings. The relationship between caregiver burden and high level of expressed emotions has demonstrated a high level of relapse among the psychiatric patients in the West.

Aim: The current study explores the relationship between caregivers' burden and level of expressed emotions by the patients with schizophrenia in Indian setting.

Mucormycosis associated with juvenile diabetes.

Mucormycosis is one of the most rapidly progressing and lethal form of fungal infections in humans which usually begins in the nose and paranasal sinuses. The fungus assaults the arteries, leading to thrombosis that subsequently causes necrosis of hard and soft tissues. The purpose of this article is to describe a rare case of maxillary necrosis due to mucormycosis in a 12-year-old diabetic patient and emphasizes on early diagnosis and timely management of this potentially fatal fungal infection.

Photocatalytic properties of silver nanoparticles decorated nanobranched TiO2 nanofibers.

In this study, nanobranched TiO2 nanofibers and silver loaded nanobranched TiO2 nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning technique followed by TiCl4 aqueous solution treatment and silver photodeposition method. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed to investigate the morphology of the products. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were conducted on the samples to study their chemical composition as well as crystallographic structure.

Knowledge and practice profile of obstetricians regarding epilepsy in women in Kerala state, India.

Purpose: To assess the knowledge of obstetricians about concerns of women with epilepsy.

Materials And Methods: We surveyed 97 obstetricians (teaching hospitals-43, private hospitals-32, and community health centers-21) using knowledge of women's issues and epilepsy (KOWIE) questionnaire II with additional questions.

Results: The mean duration of practice of the surveyed obstetricians was 12.

A comparative study of pH modulation and trace elements of various fruit juices on enamel erosion: an in vitro study.

Fruit juices are popular worldwide with children of all ages as they are sweet and perceived to be healthful. This in vitro study was sought to measure pH of 10 different fruit juices, to find out possible erosive effects on human dental enamel of 40 extracted sound premolars and also to measure fluoride and trace elements of these juices. The estimation of pH of fruit juices was done by using Systronic upH 362 pH meter.

Unusual occurrence of accessory central cusp in the maxillary second primary molar.

Accessory cusp present on the occlusal surface may seldom pose problems. While its presence may not be a cause for alarm in most instances, it can sometimes lead to serious consequences if it is damaged. This case presents a rare finding of unilateral central accessory cusp seen on the occlusal surface of the maxillary left second primary molar and discusses the need for continuous dental surveillance and preventive measures.

BMP-7 inhibits TGF-β-induced invasion of breast cancer cells through inhibition of integrin β(3) expression.

Background: The transforming growth factor (TGF)-β superfamily comprises cytokines such as TGF-β and Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMPs), which have a critical role in a multitude of biological processes. In breast cancer, high levels of TGF-β are associated with poor outcome, whereas inhibition of TGF-β-signaling reduces metastasis. In contrast, BMP-7 inhibits bone metastasis of breast cancer cells.

Atypical presentation of bilateral supplemental maxillary central incisors with unusual talon cusp.

Delayed eruption of maxillary permanent central incisors in a child poses a distressing esthetic quandary to parents, by virtue of its location in the dental architecture. Well-aligned anterior teeth add confidence to smile and have enhanced self-esteem, which is critical even in early life. Impaction of the maxillary central incisors compared to third molars or the canines is less reported; bilateral supplemental maxillary central incisors related to impacted permanent maxillary central incisors are rare and one of the supplemental central incisors showing unusual talon is still infrequent.
