Compartmentalized models with coupled catalytic networks are considered as "protocells" in the context of research related to the origin of life. To model the kinetics of a simple cellular uptake-metabolism process, we use a compartmentalized protocell system that combines liposome-encapsulated intravesicular reporter pairs with co-encapsulated enzymes to monitor the membrane transport of a substrate (analyte uptake) and its subsequent enzymatic reaction inside the vesicles (metabolism to the product). The intravesicular chemosensing ensembles consist of the macrocycles cucurbit[7]uril or p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene and matching fluorescent dyes to set up suitable reporter pairs.

During any infectious disease outbreak, effective and timely quarantine of infected individuals, along with preventive measures by the population, is vital for controlling the spread of infection in society. Therefore, this study attempts to provide a mathematically validated approach for managing the epidemic spread by incorporating the Monod-Haldane incidence rate, which accounts for psychological effects, and a saturated quarantine rate as Holling functional type III that considers the limitation in quarantining of infected individuals into the standard Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Quarantine-Recovered (SEIQR) model. The rate of change of each subpopulation is considered as the Caputo form of fractional derivative where the order of derivative represents the memory effects in epidemic transmission dynamics and can enhance the accuracy of disease prediction by considering the experience of individuals with previously encountered.

The design of synthetic systems with interrelated reaction sequences that model incipient biological complexity is limited by physicochemical tools that allow the direct monitoring of the individual processes in real-time. Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the adrenal gland is an uncommon presentation of malignant adrenal tumors and bilateral presentation is extremely rare. It is an extremely rare occurrence, unusual symptoms, and both epithelioid and sarcomatoid components in histology are a challenge to diagnose sarcomatoid carcinoma of adrenal origin. An overarching challenge in the development of supramolecular sensor systems is to enhance their sensitivity, which commonly involves the synthesis of refined receptors with increased affinity to the analyte. We show that a dramatic sensitivity increase by 1-2 orders of magnitude can be achieved by encapsulating supramolecular chemosensors inside liposomes and exposing them to a pH gradient across the lipid bilayer membrane. This causes an imbalance of the influx and efflux rates of basic and acidic analytes leading to a significantly increased concentration of the analyte in the liposome interior.

Enzyme activity measurements are essential for many research areas, , for the identification of inhibitors in drug discovery, in bioengineering of enzyme mutants for biotechnological applications, or in bioanalytical chemistry as parts of biosensors. In particular in high-throughput screening (HTS), sensitive optical detection is most preferred and numerous absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy-based enzyme assays have been developed, which most frequently require time-consuming fluorescent labelling that may interfere with biological recognition. The use of supramolecular chemosensors, which can specifically signal analytes with fluorescence-based read-out methods, affords an attractive and label-free alternative to more established enzyme assays.

Quantifying the passage of the large peptide protamine (Ptm) across CymA, a passive channel for cyclodextrin uptake, is in the focus of this study. Using a reporter-pair-based fluorescence membrane assay we detected the entry of Ptm into liposomes containing CymA. The kinetics of the Ptm entry was independent of its concentration suggesting that the permeation through CymA is the rate-limiting factor.

In the present article, the dynamics of a novel combination of ratio-dependent incidence rate and saturated treatment rate in susceptible-infected-recovered disease compartmental model has been presented. The ratio-dependent incidence rate has been incorporated into the model to monitor the situation when ratio of the number of infectives to that of the susceptibles is getting higher. The saturated treatment rate of the infected population has been considered as Holling type II functional, which explains the limitation in treatment availability.

Metallacarboranes are a class of inorganic boron clusters that have recently been recognized as biologically active compounds. Herein, we report on the host-guest complexation of several cobalt bis(1,2-dicarbollide) anions (COSANs) with cyclodextrins (CDs) in aqueous solution. The binding affinities reach micromolar values, which are among the highest known values for native CDs, and exceed those for neutral hydrophobic organic guest molecules.
