Characterizing dynamic heterogeneities during nanogel degradation.

Understanding photodegradation of nanogels is critical for dynamic control of their properties and functionalities. We focus on nanogels formed by end-linking of four-arm polyethylene glycol precursors with photolabile groups and characterize dynamic heterogeneities in these systems during degradation. We use our recently developed dissipative particle dynamics framework that captures the controlled scission of bonds between the precursors and diffusion of degraded fragments at the mesoscale.

Oncogenic mutant KRAS inhibition through oxidation at cysteine 118.

Specific reactive oxygen species activate the GTPase Kirsten rat sarcoma virus (KRAS) by reacting with cysteine 118 (C118), leading to an electron transfer between C118 and nucleoside guanosine diphosphate (GDP), which causes the release of GDP. Here, we have mimicked permanent oxidation of human KRAS at C118 by replacing C118 with aspartic acid (C118D) in KRAS to show that oncogenic mutant KRAS is selectively inhibited via oxidation at C118, both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, the combined treatment of hydrogen-peroxide-producing pro-oxidant paraquat and nitric-oxide-producing inhibitor N(ω)-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester selectively inhibits human mutant KRAS activity by inducing oxidization at C118.

Recommendations to determine the needs of medical staff are scarce, generating appreciable variability. The French Intensive Care Society (FICS) and the French National Council of Intensive Care Medicine (CNP MIR, Conseil National Professionel de Médecine Intensive Réanimation) have established a technical committee of experts, the purposes of which were to draft recommendations regarding staffing needs in ICUs and to propose optimal organisation of work hours, a key objective being improved workplace quality of life.

The role of laminins in cancer pathobiology: a comprehensive review.

Laminins (LMs) are a family of heterotrimeric glycoproteins that form the structural foundation of basement membranes (BM). By acting as molecular bridges between cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM) through integrins and other surface receptors, they regulate key cellular signals that influence cell behavior and tissue architecture. Despite their physiological importance, our understanding of the role of LMs in cancer pathobiology remains fragmented.

Background: After cardiac arrest (CA), the European recommendations suggest to use a neuron-specific enolase (NSE) level > 60 µg/L at 48-72 h to predict poor outcome. However, the prognostic performance of NSE can vary depending on electroencephalogram (EEG). The objective was to determine whether the NSE threshold which predicts poor outcome varies according to EEG patterns and the effect of electrographic seizures on NSE level.

Molecular ecology of novel amdoparvoviruses and old protoparvoviruses in Spanish wild carnivorans.

Wild carnivorans are key hosts of parvoviruses of relevance for animal health and wildlife conservation. However, the distribution and diversity of parvoviruses among wild carnivorans are under-investigated, particularly in Southern Europe. Iatrogenic Botulism Following Botulinum Toxin Injection as an Adjunct to Abdominal Wall Reconstruction for Incisional Hernia.

Open ventral hernia repair is one of the most commonly performed surgeries by general surgeons worldwide. In the case of complex incisional hernias, there are adjunct techniques that can help abdominal wall reconstruction surgery, such as type A botulinum toxin (BTA), whose injection results in muscle relaxation and growth of muscle fiber length, allowing fascial closure without the need for advanced techniques. We report a case of a male patient who underwent ultrasound-guided BTA injection in the abdominal wall and, five days later, was admitted to our emergency department with dysarthria, muscular weakness, dyspnea on small exertion, and constipation.

Using High-Speed Videoendoscopy to Analyze Laryngeal Closure Parameters During Normal Swallow.

Objective: This pilot study was designed to test the tolerability of a lower scope position and feasibility of custom-designed MATLAB graphical user interface (GUI) used to analyze playback review of laryngeal high-speed videoendoscopy (laryngeal HSV) during healthy volitional dry swallows. We hypothesized this method would conceptually provide time resolution for glottic closure events compared with standard (30 frames per second, fps), and enable a means to measure timing, sequence, and duration of laryngeal movements during swallowing not otherwise visualized.

Patient Safety Incidents in Inpatient Psychiatric Settings: An Expert Opinion Survey.

Patient safety in psychiatric inpatient facilities remains under-researched despite its crucial importance. This study aims to address this gap by using expert opinion to estimate the frequency of diverse patient safety incidents (PSIs) in psychiatric settings and to compare it with the existing literature. Utilizing a seven-step approach, a questionnaire based on the World Health Organization's International Classification for Patient Safety was developed and deployed.

Open Disclosure Among General Practitioners as Second Victim of a Patient Safety Incident: A Cross-Sectional Study in Flanders (Belgium).

Background: The impact of a patient safety incident (PSI) on nurses and doctors in hospital settings has been studied in depth. However, the impact of a PSI on general practitioners and how those health care professionals can be supported are less clear.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to investigate the prevalence of GPs (in training) being personally involved in a PSI, as well as the impact, the support needed, and open disclosure in the aftermath of these PSIs.

Prevalence of sleep disturbance among Chinese healthcare professionals increases Eastward-caution with position in time zone.

We analyze data of the prevalence of sleep disturbance among Chinese healthcare professionals and maintain that they increase Eastward, refining previous results. We suggest that position in time zone is a valid explanatory metric only after daily rhythms have been uniformed. On a more general note, this finding suggest that daylight saving time might help reduce sleep disturbance.
