Cyclopropanes are commonly used as valuable 3-carbon building blocks. Herein, we disclose a different reactivity pattern of furanyl cyclopropanes, which serve as a 4-carbon component in Lewis acid-promoted [4+2] cycloadditions with nitrosoarenes to afford 1,2-oxazine derivatives. Importantly, the regioselectivity of the cycloaddition reaction can be controlled by the appropriate choice of the Lewis acid.

Background: Kidney transplantation is the gold standard treatment for end-stage kidney disease in children. Rare genetic systemic diseases associated with cystic kidney disease such as COL4A1-related disorder and oral facial digital syndrome type 1 could contribute to end-stage kidney disease in the pediatric population but there is scarce evidence in the literature regarding kidney transplant outcomes in these cases.

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) can be found in marine and estuarine waters due to accidental spills of oil and derivatives, as well as in production water and effluents discharged from petrochemical plants. Addressing the bioremediation of these compounds in saline environments and effluents with elevated salinity levels is imperative. In this study, the halotolerance of Aspergillus niger was assessed by subjecting it to a stepwise increase in salinity, achieved through progressive addition of NaCl from 2 to 30‰ (v/v).

The controlled co-assembly of biomacromolecules through tuneable interactions offers a simple and fascinating opportunity to assemble multiple molecules into a single entity with enhanced complexity and unique properties. Herein, our study presents a dynamic co-assembled system using the multistimuli responsive intrinsically disordered protein Rec1-resilin and the adhesive hydrophilic protein silk sericin (SS). We utilized advanced characterization techniques including circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and small/ultra-small angle neutron scattering (SANS/USANS) to elucidate the detailed co-assembly behavior of the system and its evolution over time and temperature.

We investigate the link between the internal microstructure of poly(-isopropylacrylamide)-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PNIPAM-PEGMA) microgels, their bulk moduli and the rheological response and structural arrangement in dense suspensions. The low degree of crosslinking combined with the increased hydrophilicity induced by the presence of PEGMA results in a diffuse, star-like density profile of the particle and very low values of the bulk modulus in dilute conditions, as determined by small angle neutron scattering (SANS). The ultrasoft nature of the particle is reflected in the changes of the structural arrangement in dense suspensions, which evidence a strong deswelling and a sharp rise of the bulk modulus at moderate packing fractions.

Articular cartilage has limited regenerative capacity, so focal lesions generate mechanical stress in the joint that induces an aggravation of the damage, which ultimately leads to osteoarthritis. We recently suggested the use of microgels at the site of the cartilage defect, as a support material, to generate a biomechanical environment where pluripotent cells differentiate towards the hyaline cartilage phenotype. Here we propose a chondral regeneration strategy based on subchondral bone injury, and filling the defect site with an agglomerate of two types of microspheres, some rigid made of a biodegradable polyester (40 μm mean diameter), and others with a gel consistency made of platelet-rich plasma obtained from circulating blood (70-110 μm diameter).

Acanthamoeba species are responsible for serious human infections, including Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) and granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE). These pathogens have a simple life cycle consisting of an infective trophozoite stage and a resistant cyst stage, with cysts posing significant treatment challenges due to their resilience against harsh conditions and chemical agents.
