Cyclopropanes are commonly used as valuable 3-carbon building blocks. Herein, we disclose a different reactivity pattern of furanyl cyclopropanes, which serve as a 4-carbon component in Lewis acid-promoted [4+2] cycloadditions with nitrosoarenes to afford 1,2-oxazine derivatives. Importantly, the regioselectivity of the cycloaddition reaction can be controlled by the appropriate choice of the Lewis acid.

Over the past decade, numerous studies have focused on optimizing these systems, though most address specific operational conditions and evaluate a limited set of performance parameters. This review synthesizes the existing literature using a meta-analysis to identify key operational factors and treatment performance metrics.

Despite its prevalence, literature exploring the neurobiology underlying DS and how this neurobiology is related to behavior is limited. This study fills this gap by examining cortical volumes and behavioral correlates in school-age children with DS.

Methods: A methodological study conducted between 2018 and 2020 in four stages: 1) literature review; 2) checklist construction; 3) content validity by 32 neonatal nursing specialists from different Brazilian states, predominantly from the southeastern region; 4) development of the final version of the instruments. Validity was performed using a Likert-type scale.
Background: Kidney transplantation is the gold standard treatment for end-stage kidney disease in children. Rare genetic systemic diseases associated with cystic kidney disease such as COL4A1-related disorder and oral facial digital syndrome type 1 could contribute to end-stage kidney disease in the pediatric population but there is scarce evidence in the literature regarding kidney transplant outcomes in these cases.
Case Presentation: We report a case of a 5-year-old male with COL4A1-related disorder who received a living-related donor kidney transplant from his mother.
Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) can be found in marine and estuarine waters due to accidental spills of oil and derivatives, as well as in production water and effluents discharged from petrochemical plants. Addressing the bioremediation of these compounds in saline environments and effluents with elevated salinity levels is imperative. In this study, the halotolerance of Aspergillus niger was assessed by subjecting it to a stepwise increase in salinity, achieved through progressive addition of NaCl from 2 to 30‰ (v/v).

We explored predictors of shift work adaptation and how it relates to disease risk biomarker levels. These analyses included 38 male, rotating shift workers, sampled twice at the end of a 3-week night shift and a 3-week day shift rotation. Participants collected all 24-h urine voids, wore activity sensors, and responded to questionnaires during each shift.

While magnetic resonance imaging has been used for this purpose, cranial ultrasound (cUS) is the primary imaging technique used in clinical practice. Here, we present the first study aiming to automate brain sulci segmentation in pre-term infants using ultrasound images.

For this, four types of barium titanate nanoparticles (BTO NPs) with different coatings were synthesized. These NPs were embedded in a polystyrene (PS) matrix to fabricate hybrid, porous membranes using the breath figures (BF) technique.

However, there are still significant gaps in understanding the role of DOC in polar environments, due to the limitations of spatiotemporal sampling. In this study, we investigated the regional aspects controlling the distribution and diffusive and advective fluxes of DOC along the northern Antarctic Peninsula (NAP) during austral late summers of 1995 and between 2015 and 2019.

These sectors are benefiting from a synergy of synthetic and engineering biology, sustainable manufacturing, and integrated design principles. Advanced techniques such as 3D bioprinting, tissue engineering, directed assembly, and self-assembly are instrumental in creating biomimetic scaffolds, tissues, organoids, medical devices, and biohybrid systems.

Current proposed mechanisms focus on cellular processes leading to, or controlling the unwanted mineralization in soft tissues. However, extracellular components such as collagen and elastin fundamentally regulate the mechanical properties of heart tissues.

Herein, our study presents a dynamic co-assembled system using the multistimuli responsive intrinsically disordered protein Rec1-resilin and the adhesive hydrophilic protein silk sericin (SS). We utilized advanced characterization techniques including circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and small/ultra-small angle neutron scattering (SANS/USANS) to elucidate the detailed co-assembly behavior of the system and its evolution over time and temperature.

The low degree of crosslinking combined with the increased hydrophilicity induced by the presence of PEGMA results in a diffuse, star-like density profile of the particle and very low values of the bulk modulus in dilute conditions, as determined by small angle neutron scattering (SANS). The ultrasoft nature of the particle is reflected in the changes of the structural arrangement in dense suspensions, which evidence a strong deswelling and a sharp rise of the bulk modulus at moderate packing fractions.

We recently suggested the use of microgels at the site of the cartilage defect, as a support material, to generate a biomechanical environment where pluripotent cells differentiate towards the hyaline cartilage phenotype. Here we propose a chondral regeneration strategy based on subchondral bone injury, and filling the defect site with an agglomerate of two types of microspheres, some rigid made of a biodegradable polyester (40 μm mean diameter), and others with a gel consistency made of platelet-rich plasma obtained from circulating blood (70-110 μm diameter).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAcanthamoeba species are responsible for serious human infections, including Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) and granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE). These pathogens have a simple life cycle consisting of an infective trophozoite stage and a resistant cyst stage, with cysts posing significant treatment challenges due to their resilience against harsh conditions and chemical agents. Current treatments for AK often involve combining diamines, such as propamidine, and biguanides, such as chlorhexidine (CLX), which exhibit limited efficacy and significant toxicity.

Scientific discoveries often hinge on synthesizing decades of research, a task that potentially outstrips human information processing capacities. Large language models (LLMs) offer a solution. LLMs trained on the vast scientific literature could potentially integrate noisy yet interrelated findings to forecast novel results better than human experts.
