The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) may predict outcomes in end-stage liver disease, but its value after transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is unclear. This study explored the link between NLR and long-term outcomes in decompensated cirrhosis patients post-TIPS. We retrospectively analyzed 184 patients treated between January 2016 and December 2021, noting demographic data, lab results, and follow-up outcomes, including liver transplantation or death.

Background: Taxane-based chemotherapy is the primary treatment for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), yet clinical outcomes remain unsatisfactory due to the persistence of chemoresistance. Identifying key factors that contribute to chemoresistance and understanding the associated molecular mechanisms is therefore essential.

Method: The GEO databases were utilized to pinpoint factors related to chemoresistance, which were subsequently validated using clinical tissue samples.

Purpose: This research investigates the effects of biochar application on rice quality through a comprehensive meta-analysis, aiming to elucidate the ambiguous impacts of biochar on rice quality indicators and providing a comprehensive quantitative evaluation to inform sustainable agricultural practices and the practical application of biochar in rice cultivation.

Design/methodology/approach: Utilizing a systematic meta-analysis, this study extracts 934 pairs of observations from 28 different studies. It integrates data to assess the overarching impact of biochar on rice quality, with a specific focus on ten essential quality indicators: brown rice rate, milled rice rate, head rice rate, chalky rice rate, degree of chalkiness, length-width ratio, amylose content, protein content, gel consistency, and eating quality score.

Article Synopsis
  • Highly porous metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets are being developed for better water absorption in atmospheric water harvesting systems, but single-component MOFs struggle with low water retention.
  • Researchers have created a new composite material by growing MOF nanosheets on hydrogel membranes, allowing for rapid water uptake and improved efficiency.
  • This innovative design has demonstrated impressive results, achieving 91.4% water saturation in just 15 minutes and maintaining effective performance even after multiple uses, providing a promising method to address freshwater scarcity.

  • Cough variant asthma (CVA) is a common condition causing chronic cough, but its complex nature and unclear biological mechanisms make treatment challenging.
  • A study analyzed the sputum metabolome of CVA patients, finding alterations in metabolic pathways linked to arginine, purine, and pyrimidine metabolism that could be improved with anti-asthmatic medication.
  • Specific metabolites, like dipeptides and thiamine phosphate, were identified as potential biomarkers for both diagnosing CVA and predicting treatment responses, suggesting issues with mitochondrial energy metabolism may play a role in CVA's development.

Article Synopsis
  • - Nanofiltration (NF) membranes traditionally come in spiral-wound modules, which can lead to high costs and operational challenges due to pressure issues.
  • - A new silk-based membrane has been developed that features a unique crumpled design, achieving high water permeance and contaminant rejection rates under both traditional and vacuum-driven systems.
  • - This innovative membrane could significantly reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in water treatment processes, making it a promising alternative for practical industrial applications.

The lung is characterized by high elasticity and complex structure, which implies that the lung is capable of undergoing complex deformation and the shape variable is substantial. Large deformation estimation poses significant challenges to lung image registration. The traditional U-Net architecture is difficult to cover complex deformation due to its limited receptive field.

Background: Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor, and metastasis remains the major cause of poor prognosis. Glucose metabolic reprogramming is one of the prominent hallmarks in cancer, providing nutrients and energy to support dramatically elevated tumor growth and metastasis. Nevertheless, the potential mechanistic links between glycolysis and breast cancer progression have not been thoroughly elucidated.

Iron-based materials are effective for the reductive removal of the disinfection byproduct bromate in water, while the construction of highly stable and active Fe-based materials with wide pH adaptability remains greatly challenging. In this study, highly dispersed iron phosphide-decorated porous carbon (FeP()@P()NC-) was prepared via the thermal hydrolysis of Fe@ZIF-8, followed by phosphorus doping (P-doping) and pyrolysis. The reduction performances of FeP()@P()NC- for bromate reduction were evaluated.

  • * A common method to create these nanovoids involves adding sacrificial nanofillers, but traditional post-etching processes can damage membrane integrity.
  • * This study introduces self-etchable nanofillers (nCaCO) that react during the polymerization process, leaving behind beneficial voids without harming membrane structure, resulting in better antifouling properties and improved rejection rates for contaminants like boron and arsenic.

Although preclinical and clinical studies have shown that exercise can inhibit bone metastasis progression, the mechanism remains poorly understood. Here, we found that non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells adjacent to bone tissue had a much lower proliferative capacity than the surrounding tumor cells in patients and mice. Subsequently, it was demonstrated that osteocytes, sensing mechanical stimulation generated by exercise, inhibit NSCLC cell proliferation and sustain the dormancy thereof by releasing small extracellular vesicles with tumor suppressor micro-RNAs, such as miR-99b-3p.

In contrast to outdoor environments, indoor positioning encounters signal propagation disruptions due to the presence of buildings, resulting in reduced accuracy and, at times, the inability to determine a location accurately. This research, leveraging the robust penetrative capabilities of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) signals in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios, introduces a methodology for refining ranging outcomes through a combination of inertial navigation and environmental adjustments to achieve high-precision spatial positioning. This approach systematically enhances the correction of signal propagation errors through walls.
