Multivalvulidan myxosporeans (Multivalvulida) of the genera Unicapsula Davis, 1924 and Kudoa Meglitsch, 1947 are mostly causative agents of latent and imperceptible infection in marine fishes. However, they are sometimes incriminated in causing post-mortem myoliquefaction or unsightly cyst formation in commercial fish. Despite the great commercial impacts of multivalvulidan infection, the biodiversity, host range and epidemiology of multivalvulidan species remain to be explored further, including infection of alternative annelid hosts.

Background: Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are currently the mainstay treatment for preventing thrombosis-induced ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or previous infarction. However, such management may potentially induce antithrombotic-associated intracranial hemorrhage, leading to significantly adverse clinical outcomes. To investigate the risk of spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) in patients under therapeutic anticoagulation.

  • Warthin tumor (WT) is a common non-cancerous tumor found in the salivary glands, especially near the ear, and usually doesn't cause pain.
  • A 70-year-old woman found a lump in her neck, which was confirmed to be WT along with a rare type of lymphoma called mantle cell lymphoma (MCL).
  • After surgery to remove the lump, the patient is stable and being watched closely to make sure her condition doesn’t get worse.

Eight Eimeria spp. (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) have been isolated from the ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus Linnaeus), native to the temperate zone of Asia and eastern regions of Europe. Enteric coccidiosis has become a major issue associated with the breeding of farmed pheasants for game bird release or meat production.

Objective: To explore mechanism of piracetam for the treatment of spinal cord injury in rats through mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway.

Methods: Fifty-four healthy 6-week-old SD female rats with body weight of 80 to 100 g were divided into sham operation group, spinal cord injury group and piracetam group by random number table method, with 18 rats in each group. Spinal cord injury model was established in spinal cord injury group and piracetam group using percussion apparatus, while sham operation group did not damage spinal cord.

Background: Test consolidation and total laboratory automation (TLA) were implemented in a core laboratory with a high volume of specimens in a medical center in Taiwan to reduce the costs of laboratory services and improve laboratory workflow and performance.

Methods: Using a retrospective research approach, 5 stat and 7 routine tests were used to analyze the in-laboratory to report turnaround time (IR-TAT). Mean, SD, medium, 90th percentile, outlier percentage of IR-TAT, full-time equivalents, productivity, tube touch moment (TTM), and financial impact were determined and compared pre- and post-TLA.

  • - The study aims to evaluate heart rate variability (HRV) as a tool for measuring job stress and sleep quality in nurses following the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • - It surveyed 403 nurses in Taiwan, revealing that 72.7% experienced poor sleep quality, with job stress being a significant factor influencing work frustration and decreased HRV.
  • - The findings suggest HRV can effectively monitor nurses' well-being, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to help those facing high job stress and sleep issues.

Shallow groundwater is the main source of water for living and industrial and agricultural production in Anqing City, which is an important basic guarantee to maintain the sustainable development of the social economy and regional ecological environment. In order to further study the water chemical characteristics and controlling factors of shallow groundwater in Anqing City, 196 groups of shallow groundwater samples were collected. A Piper diagram graph, Gibbs chart, ion ratio, and mathematical statistics were comprehensively used to study the water chemical characteristics and controlling factors of groundwater in Anqing City, and the contribution of different sources to the water chemical components of groundwater was quantitatively evaluated.

  • Scientists are studying how heat treatment (hyperthermia) can help fight nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) and why some cancer cells resist the heat.
  • They found that using heat with a drug called oridonin makes cancer cells easier to kill, especially the tough ones that don't respond well to regular treatments.
  • The study also discovered that a protein called Cirbp helps cancer cells survive heat, and reducing Cirbp improves the effectiveness of heat treatment against these cancer cells.

  • Atypical thymic carcinoid tumors are rare neuroendocrine tumors that can be easily misdiagnosed, leading to worse prognoses if not identified correctly.
  • A 33-year-old male experienced numbness and fatigue, and imaging initially suggested a thymoma; however, further investigation revealed the diagnosis of atypical thymic carcinoid.
  • The patient had successful surgical resection, and there were no signs of recurrence or metastasis during follow-up, highlighting the importance of accurate diagnosis in such rare tumors.*

B-cell-specific Moloney murine leukemia virus integration site 1 (Bmi-1) is overexpressed in various cancer types. We found that mRNA levels were elevated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cell lines. In immunohistochemical analyses, high Bmi-1 levels were observed in not only 5 of 38 non-cancerous nasopharyngeal squamous epithelial biopsies, but also in 66 of 98 NPC specimens (67.

Rationale: Endometrioid adenofibroma is a benign epithelial neoplasm of the ovary, most of which are often unilateral. The symptoms of endometrioid adenofibroma are often nonspecific and misleading. Therefore, a full understanding of the characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment methods of this disease is of great importance.

  • The study analyzed how seasonal changes in food availability, temperature, and rainfall impact the diet and behavior of Shortridge's langur, an endangered primate in the Eastern Himalayas, between August 2012 and September 2013.
  • Findings revealed distinct daily patterns, with langurs showing peak feeding times in the morning and late afternoon, and spending varying amounts of time on feeding (38.5%), resting (35%), traveling (24.5%), and socializing (2%).
  • Seasonal changes significantly affected their diet, resulting in increased feeding on young leaves in spring, greater fruit consumption in summer, and a rise in mature leaf intake during winter; overall, they exhibited a higher foraging effort compared to other temperate

  • - The study examined how COVID-19 impacted elderly emergency department (ED) patients in Taiwan by comparing data from before (2019) and during (2020) the pandemic.
  • - Researchers found that ED visits dropped significantly during the pandemic, peaking at a 32% decrease in March 2020, and the average length of stay (LOS) for patients also decreased with fewer diagnoses reported.
  • - The findings suggest that the pandemic has altered elderly patients' behavior in seeking emergency care, highlighting the need for improved understanding and management of healthcare resources in Taiwan's aging population.

Objective: Much of our knowledge of patient autonomy of DNR (do-not-resuscitate) is derived from the cross-sectional questionnaire surveys. Using signatures on statutory documents and medical records, we analyzed longitudinal data to understand the fact of terminal cancer patients' autonomous DNR decision-making in Taiwan.

Methods: Using the medical information system database of one public medical center in Taiwan, we identified hospitalized cancer patients who died between Jan.

  • Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common cancer with a sneaky onset, making early diagnosis critical for treatment success, and next generation sequencing (NGS) is a key technology for speeding up detection.
  • The study aims to identify specific genes in fecal DNA that could help diagnose and predict CRC outcomes, and establish a platform for screening through fecal DNA analysis.
  • Results showed high mutation rates in certain genes in pre-surgery stool samples from CRC patients, indicating that tumor-specific DNA can be detected in feces, which may help reflect cancer mutations present in tumor tissues.
